Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Am I supposed to like my job?

There are so many people I know who don't work here and who don't feel dread when going to work and I'm not one of them. I hate my job. I don't know if it's Ford and its toxic culture or if maybe I'm just not a good fit, but I just hate what I do to the point that it's making me depressed. This can't be normal, right? Is it me or is it Ford?

I hated my job when I worked for Ford, so I upped and got the F out. I’ve enjoyed working for another company for several years ever since.

I can’t really say what is normal. I can tell you that I have been in the same place that you are at, so I’d say you aren’t alone. I have worked at other companies where I didn’t hate my job. Some positions in Ford I liked better than others.

My question for you would be what about your job do you hate? The tasks?
The boss? The team? The culture? The industry?

You could find a new position within the company. Ford has many opportunities to work in different areas. You could have several different careers all inside of Ford. Or you could go to another company.

My advice would be to try to find another position within Ford depending on why you hate your job. Otherwise find a new job. First and foremost you need to take care of yourself and being depressed because you hate your job isn’t an option.

If one can be cheerful in one's work this is a true blessing. I do hope you find that special place of 'great people and awesome work', because well . . . work is 'work' and that's why we do no spell it f u n, right ? It is rare that one can have everything on their own terms.
There is lots of great and caring advice in this thread and you should consider it well.

If you don't see any reason to stay where you are then start networking and looking around for something new. Why spend a large part of your time every day going to a place that drags you down? Life's too short for that. Just make sure that you have a solid offer(s) in hand before you tell them to go pound sand.

I loved my job. 40 years of being proud to work at Ford. I worked hard and always did what was in the best interest for the company. 15 minutes in August of last year I was terminated without cause. Ford is not the same family it once was.

You said you hate what you do. You didn't say you hate your coworkers or you hate the Company. If it us really a matter of hating what you do, you should consider a career change.

Look for a new position if you can find one, look for a new company if you can’t. Not worth dealing with toxic management and a job you don’t care about. Care about your career over whatever your mgt wants, especially since they won’t think twice when cutting people indiscriminately whenever the next edict comes.
There are areas of the company that are improving in culture, you just have to ask around.

Clearly the job or company is not for you. If you are miserable, there are plenty of other opportunities for you to explore at other companies. No use in wasting your life doing something you dislike.

Get out there and find something new! And maybe speak to a therapist if you are feeling really down.

My advice would be to get yourself positioned within the Model e organization. Doug Field has been building up and structuring a new kind of Ford business unit not seen in the past. The heart of the Ford+ Plan company transformation lies with us. The responsibility is tremendous, but, the rewards will be worth it. Ignore the negativity regarding the company transformation plan that you may read here, luckily there are a few of us on this board that try to remain positive and trust me, our leadership knows the best path for a prosperous future for the company.

Sounds like a question for Dr. Phil, not Layoff.com!

It's entirely subjective. I love my job, the type of work fits my skillset and goals, my management is supportive.

Not everyone has those ingredients. Am I aware of the spectre of a lost job? Yes. But until then, I still love my job and I purpose to do the best I can at it for my sake, not the companies. I work hard because it's better for me professionally and emotionally.

Far too many people on here whine and complain about the company and then resolve to do as little as possible to collect a paycheck.

To them, I say grow up. If you expect better, be better. They have sunk down to the level they say they hate.

In whatever circumstance, you can control how you respond to it and make it work.

For many people it is normal. You seem younger, so my general advice is that you should work to live, not live to work - focus on jobs that allow you enough so you can live day to day, and also save for tomorrow . Find hobbies or activities outside of work that you really love that you can engage in that can energize you and fill up your life.

That being said, it could be you aren’t a good long term fit, not do much to the specific Ford toxic culture, but the auto industry in general. Historically the auto industry is very competitive and very tough, heavily regulated, and more prone/subject to economic disturbances than some other industries- so you have to be very comfortable with constant change, as well as the constant ups and downs of the business cycle. In short, it is not for everyone.

It depends on what you don't like? The job tasks, the people, the culture, the uncertainty, the backstabbing, the physical location, the...? Then you need to ask yourself, am i here because of the paycheck? If so, there's your answer...it will never get better for you. So you can choose to stay and be unhappy, choose to stay and apply for another internal position, or leave. Your fate and mental well being is in your hands. Wish you the best in whatever you choose.
