Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxon is no longer selective in the hiring process

Exxon has changed so much since I started working here two decades ago. Back then, we were known as a very selective company. We only hired people who had the right qualifications, experience, and education. But lately, it seems like we have been hiring just about anyone with a heartbeat. I have personally witnessed some very unqualified people come through the door and be welcomed with open arms. It's a shame, considering how things used to be.

It certainly feel that we hire anybody right now in the US, irrespective of race or s-x. Simply put, the cream of the crème that graduates today does not want anything to do with EM. So we hire just to fill gaps.
However, the so called selective EM of the past is a myth too. Yes we were more selective than today but I have some good examples of failures that were hired in my generation thirty years ago. And for those that want to check, see the lack of talent in our senior technical folks. These people were not hired today.

This mind set is EM’s biggest problem. It is not 20 years ago so stop thinking and acting like it is. Not many people want to work for a dinosaur, in a cash cow industry with forced ranking that no longer pays above market value. Does that sound attractive to you?

I have also met some new hires more competent than my Supervisor on day one of their employment.

Those incompetent hires get to Supervisor level really quickly.

Especially in Baton Rouge!

It is true that EM would almost always give offers to every female engineering candidate.

EM trying to attain 50% female engineer workforce when the recruiting pool for engineers is less than 10% female.

Recruiting 100% of any demographic will result in lower standards, no matter which demographic.

Any positions that get offered to the remaining pool of all non female demographics will be highly competitive and result in much higher standards.

Move forward 5 to 10 years after recruiting and those lower standard recruits of that demographic are promoted at a higher rate than all other demographics and by default the lowest standard recruits are placed above all other demographics that had to meet higher standards just to get recruited.

Look around. If you are in a group of engineers, you can see the effects.

@xlm Great, the guy who has problems with women (maybe he’s secretly attracted to other men?) is trolling this thread with his s-xist BS.

You guys should check out Reddit. It’s where your adult son who still lives with you goes to garbage-post. You’ll fit right in.

Standards have definitely dropped significantly. In UK, the criteria is mostly are they available and are they enthusiastic? I don't think anything else is considered.

Pretty sure selective hiring is not done over the last 4 to 5 years. In one case, I’m pretty sure person was hired because of connections. Her former employer said they were trying to get rid of her before her departure. Her qualifications on her resume were clearly exaggerated. I caught her stealing my work and repackaging it as her own. I would not have mind it so much if not for the amount of errors and misrepresentation after she modified it. It was so embarrassing that I had to speak up in case any of it would come back to me. That person should be moved or PIP before she does anymore damage.

@OP What is meant by “selective” here?

A lot of you seem to be whining about having to sit in the same room with someone other than white men your age who share your views.

If you’re talking about actual skills, there’s really not a lot to a white-collar job in an O&G company. What do you want? Someone with a PhD and 10 years of experience to arrange your slide deck and sit on Zoom? Unrealistic.

Easy fix: STOP hiring to meet DIEversity quotas and things will improve albeit slowly.

It's like steering a super tanker...you can't turn it on a dime but given enough time and space, we can fix this colossal SHEite show.

It can all be explained by the fact that incompetence rules the day at EM. Incompetent people tend to promote and hire others just like themselves.
