Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Dan made 100% of workforce suffer mentally to cut 15%

This says a lot about him as a person or leader..

Verizon will be sinking ship. Forget customer loyalty, I do not think there will be any employee loyalty.

"Dan made 100% of workforce suffer mentally to cut 15%..." - OP
You failed to acknowledge the Unionized percentage in your calculation.
They're not the "at will" employees, as they had a binding contract, and I don't think there existed a "suffer mentally" mentality within their ranks.

How could this have been handled better: we should have been told percentage goal, announcement dates and off payroll dates. Instead we read about it in the WSJ or here. People should've been given an opportunity to volunteer while the list was being made. They should've announced no changes to the severance plan, rather than leave everyone wondering. People shouldn't have waited all day for an 'all clear' that never came. If there were rules about people out on disability, parental leave etc they shouldve been announced. The outcome mightve been the same, but the trauma would've been reduced.

For all the light bulbs in the room, describe how you would execute a RIF for a company of this scale?

Don’t worry. Dan will surround himself with all of his PayPal buddies and Black belts laughing all the way to the bank. You know, the board needs that additional million next year.

yeah I'll never forget how poorly this was handled. This has been a month of worry for those paying attention ( at least ) . It's a terrible feeling to see how little your long time employer thinks of you.

They can’t rip the bandaid. Re alignment of territories, negotiating with retailers, re distributing teams and operational processes is not a flip of a switch. Also remember it’s 15000 employees that’s a big fu….g number, its not like lets get rid of a couple of people. I totally agree it’s been in the works. Sc..w Dan and all these C suite level people, They are definitely picking who is staying at the top based on political connections.

@a4 also a great point. It's also very possible that he has been leading the pack since before he was publicly named CEO.

@a4 If it was in progress, they would have ripped off the bandaid right away rather than peeling it slowly for weeks.

Which is why I'm leaving whether I get laid off this morning or not - the only question will be how soon.

A side note here. It takes much longer than Dan S has been here to RIF 15,000 people. This has been in the works for months!

You make a great point. It's like this was (intentionally?) an exercise for the other 85%.

Yes, at the end it was all a mind game on the employees, investors and competitors with carefully timed and crafted hints but no real information for weeks… torture! If I don’t have the whole family dependent on this job, I’d jump ship right now and give my big fat middle finger to this whole thing right now.
