The job on its own is demanding enough, but knowing it could disappear any day adds a whole new layer of anxiety and exhaustion. Has anyone ever considered the revolutionary idea that employees who feel reasonably secure and actually rested might be far more productive?

You are right where they want you. The late George Carlin used to say: "...they got you by the b**."
Employee comfort is an expensive luxury to FT500 companies. And headcount is a real expense they always want to trim down, hence your discomfort. Which is very interesting for a company that make no real product, and only function on the whims of the market, and through premiums collections, as well as making sure they don't pay out claims when they must.
Why is health insurance profitable again?
@OP I’m sure that the ELT sees a secure and rested employee as being too complacent. They want you sitting on the edge of your chair, constantly looking over your shoulder. To them that’s productivity.
That would imply they give a sh-t. They do not.
