Thread regarding IBM layoffs

IBM 2022 end of year layoffs has begun.

Some IBMers have received notices to looking for work inside IBM in other groups within certain amount of time and if none is found will be laid off.
Some contractors have been told 12/31/2022 is their last day.
At least AIX kernel development and support is affected.

GGKG You have hit the nail on the head. IBM has moved AIX and OS/400 to sustain mode with all new coding being focused on LINUX. It’s ironic that it took IBM 10 years vs the ISV install base to realize this and move in this direction. What does that foretell? Expect AIX and OS/400 to be ridden into the sunset just like previous legacy OS’s. There is a secondary observation that you can take away from this. Power as a major HW platform is also fading quickly due to ISV’s saying “meh” to Linux on Power.

@dupe+1kc4p3Il Any offshoring for the most part is taking a product towards Cat-C (Sustaining) and/or out.

Our product has been trying to deprecate AIX for years but one or two HUGE customers drive revenue.

Realistically to any AIX supporters - what's it good for? Sure it was better than LINUX in the early years - but now it's an anachronism.

It's got sucky compilers always a major rev or two behind GNU compatability.
kernel modules can't be re-loaded on the fly (generalizing some here). Cr---y
compatibility on everything. AIX build breaks are the most common Gerrit issue - and nobody does anything but groan .... knowing they're probably next.

So for the few large customers Arvind Anchoring Aix - make a consulting deal to migrate them to Linux. (for the ignorant Linux even RHEL is on Power).

If you don't find a job the redeployment will become and RA. You will get offered a 3 months severance. Tom Claburn with the register has been looking for those impacted by redeployments.

Moving AIX to, India or anywhere off shore doesn’t mean IBM is about to abandon AIX. It does mean IBM is concerned about AIX’s costs, and has offshored it to get costs under control. It also implies AIX has migrated to sustain mode vs strategic mode which says most development has most likely moved to LINUX. The migration to LINUX isn’t bad on its face until you realize the LINUX move incorporates development on Intel LINUX and doesn’t center around LINUX on Power. That is a very very bad sign for Power brand

All of AIX development was moved to India back in August in prep for sale. The grim reaper comes for Power in 2023.

Here in NL too, before Christmas unexpected call that current oracle practice will stop in 2023. Everyone redploys to other units. So IBM really stands for I've Been Moved. Very dissappointing IBM.

Re-deployment is in IBM's playbook. After some time (more than the 30 for RA which they claim this isn't) 60-90 days - anybody not landed will be RA'd (as a separate news "unrelated" news event).

So they claim "No time limit for re-deployment" but gotta figure this will (need to be) contained Q1 2023.

Somewhat similar - the Watson Health sale/re-deployment:

What happens if you cannot find a job inside IBM after a redeployment? Do you get laid off with a severance package or get placed under PIP?

End of year and layoffs! I am shocked and dismayed. IBM would never do such a thing.

Isn't AIX already in Mexico?
Systems "re-deployment" started week before Thanksgiving. I anticipate it will effectively be 50% layoffs; I figure contained within Q1 2023

So are the contractors doing hosting, cloud, coding, or something else

Appears many (all?) contractors working with Mainframe projects are being let go. This is certainly true in the Poughkeepsie area.
