This app is something to identify your location in the event of an emergency and you dial 911 from your laptop. Had it on my laptop since 2018 when our dept started going remote. Usually after a restart I see it randomly siphoning a lot of cpu% so I manually end the task. Using my own phone would be way quicker than having to use my laptop for 911.

strictly used for voip (aka soft phones). as for the system tray icon denoting location is being shared, this is a Microsoft windows things and pops up anytime an app or website is requesting your location.
@bb exactly, so if you're in a building that has an emergency or you call 911, they know exactly where to go.
In the old days, they had lists of all phone numbers tied to seats.
That has been on for many years, when we started getting voice over IP phones on our machines. This was needed to identify your location so it could be relayed to 911 services in case of emergency.
Not sure about 911 but WF is tracking location for a while now, there is a small icon like target logo flash from time to time, that's the tracking running.
It's for tracking coffee badgers now. Just work as prescribed 9-5 M-F. Covid is over peeps
