Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

I'm thinking of leaving not long after joining

Would it be a mistake to leave EM a little under two months after joining? I don't particularly like or dislike my job, but I finally got an offer from a company I've been trying to get into for a few years and I don't want to miss this opportunity. Would it be unethical of me to just walk away so soon after joining?

The only thing to consider is it’s hard to get back into EM but if the other company is better for you, go.

Just Go. Even call them when you start to work from the other company that you are leaving. EM company does not respect any ethical agreement when the people when they are layoff , fire , NSE or PIP. DO the best for you. That kind of cr-p of statement of "We are EM" applies only to the EM board or brownnosers. From NOW and ON , not two weeks notice with this kind of companies, EXCEPT if you need the money.

You need to grow up. This is business, do the best for you. That kind of bullcr@ap that they are the greatest and brightest do not exist. Do not combine feelings with work in this kind of companies. Everybody is going to take advantage over you. Just leave.

If you had your hopes set for working for the other company, by all means, leave. No one will miss you. No bridges burned. Plus new hires have less than a 50% retention rate to make it past 2 years. Majority get PIP out within 5 years or less.

Do what you think is best and don’t feel you have any responsibility to XOM.

In the last 2 years XOM consciously recruited people that they did not make offers to out of college. When XOM experienced high attrition they actively recruited these people even though they had been at different companies for less than 4 months. XOM didn’t feel a shred of guilt taking these people.

I think they have set the standard about how you should feel about walking away.

Seriously, do what feels right and what’s best for you. But you need to ride it out at the next job for a few years before any career change again. You’ll become damaged goods with too many job changes in a short period of time. So make sure this is what you want.

ExxonMobil has no soul so don’t worry if you’ll upset the company or any person.

20 years from now, making the right decision without regrets will matter the most.

Just leave. It’s business.

If a business doesn’t want you or need you, they won’t keep you because of feelings. I don’t say this to be malicious but the reality is, this is business.

You have to do what is right for you. If you want to worn elsewhere, go and do so. Be respectful and gracious but do what is better for you.

@OP There’s nothing that says you can’t have both, at least in the short term.

Take the offer, keep your job at Exxon, pocket the extra money. If it gets to be too much or some nitwit manager starts poking around, come up with some decent lies to buy yourself some time, then ditch the lowest-paying job.

To all of you company heroes, please, spare us the ethics lectures. Employers have been sticking it to employees since the beginning of time. Nothing wrong with turning the game on them for a change.

Do what is right for you. I accepted my first job too hastily after college, and had a lot of regrets as interviews/offers from better companies came in a month or two later. I thought I was doing the ethical thing. But really I was just hurting my career and happiness. I left the company anyway, but after a year or two.

Just check the policy if you took any relocation benefits. Some of those may have a pay-back period.

If you're working at the O&A Chemical plant in Beaumont don't walk away RUN away as fast as you can. The work/life balance sucks and Management doesn't care because it does not affect them.
