Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Punished for being competent

My responsibilities keep increasing because I’m one of the only ones left who knows how to do the job well due to layoffs/high turnover/offshoring but I’m not getting anything in return.

Bonuses in our group keep getting reduced and my promotion was not approved by HR….it seems the good workers are being saddled with lots of work and no reward while the low performing get to do no projects. The offshore team basically does nothing all day because they can’t get things figured out and are almost impossible to reach due to the time difference, so no one wants to assign them a project. I even have to work over the holiday to monitor our systems without anything in return. Originally, the offshore team was supposed to but there was no confidence they could handle it. So then why were they hired?

This is how WF treats good workers…

Wake up- you're being used. Empty promises of promotion, more work, etc.

Not only do you get to do more work, you are targeted by coworkers as you're good. Especially with the new stack rankings. Been on teams where people offload their work on others then punch them from behind just to influence the stack rankings. Managers have their favorites which they always move mountains for. Work isn't appreciated. You never win here.

Automate your job and quit.

Exact same situation here. Good workers get completely overloaded, have to cover for 3+ people, plus get all the “project” work. Offshore workers are incompetent. Any issue they tell us to figure it out. As soon as bonuses (if any) hit the bank account, I’m out of here! I know many others in the same position.

Sounds about right. In audit, if you are competent they keep you at the AIC level because that is where are the work is done. If you can kiss the right butts and meet enough metrics they will fast track you to Senior Manager or director.

There are tons of senior managers and directors in internal audit that would completely fail at in charging an audit.

I learned early on that good work is rewarded with more work.
Now that we are much more diverse, I stopped taking on any work above my usual since many aren’t competent enough to do a good job. I also stopped correcting grammar.
It’s a race to the bottom.

I’d quit with no notice at this point once I found something else. What a rotten place!

There's no reason to work hard at WF. Your job security, raises, bonuses, and promotions will be based on demographic factors and nepotism (and now RTO) WAY before actual job performance.

To be fair though, it's not just WF. Most orgs are like this (banking or not).

Also, there often is a disconnect between how employees see themselves (in terms of value) and how management sees them. What's important to you isn't always important to mgmt. Sometimes an employee will think that working extra hours to crank out a spreadsheet will get them rewarded because they worked really hard on it.

But big picture, that spreadsheet wasn't as important to mgmt. Also, mgmt is results-oriented. They don't care if something you did was difficult or easy - as long as it got done, that's all that matters. There's no reward for hard work, only smart work.

Bottom line: no matter where you work, putting in constant extra effort will almost always result in your being disappointed. Remember that work is an ongoing contract - your time for their money. It's business, and only business. Focus on fulfilling just what you need to for your end of the contract.

FYI, HR doesn't approve/decline your promotion, once the paperwork is done and agreed within your area it is done. HR does not then "approve it". You are being fed some lie from your manager or exec that just doesn't want to do it.
Unfortunately your promotion is likely going to some buddy of the exec to someone that just came over from Chase.
As others have said, just take this as a sign to leave, it won't change.

This way at many places in WF which is why I left my old unit. There are better places if you look for them. Problem is now they prefer to hire from outside because of the.failed Chase management team.

I second the “get a new job” comment. There is too much dead weight at this company to be one of the competent ones. It is and will always be thankless pulling the weight for all the employees biding their time hoping for a package.

Move on, quit. Wells is awful. Refuse to work weekends, let them go to he-l! You are in control of your life, not them.

welcome to today's corp america. Please teach your Indian replacements for free, please do the work of the DEI co workers, don't ask for a raise for inflation, and don't dare think you can advance. These dummies wonder why worker productivity is down.

This sounds like my situation too, and I think it's now commonplace, especially in IT. They let go almost half our team, then a bunch of good people quit so now our work has doubled. They are attempting to bring in off shore and I spend a good portion of my time fixing their mistakes because they don't understand anything more than following a script

That how your group treats you. Not all of Wells. If HR didn't approve your promotion then someone didn't justify it well enough, fight hard enough or your management team doesn't think it's warranted.

I would just start looking regardless of this is how you feel. Either internal or external, but don't think all groups are the same.

Was subject to that as well! And a new manager who had never had a customer facing position. I left WF. Felt abused and very taken for granted. Whole management team terrible.

Been there, done that for years with no return. Time to move on to a different role.
