Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Mental Health at 3M

It appears to me there are many 3Mers who are struggling with mental health issues. The constant layoffs, increased workloads, toxicity, harassment, micromanagement, etc. seem to be taking a toll on so many of our colleagues.

The colleagues I spoke with have high anxiety, depression and more. The abuse and harassment triggered PTSD in at least one senior manager.

I am wondering if anyone else is seeing similar issues within their teams?

Please be kind with your responses. I was reluctant to bring up this issue but believe mental health is important and an issue that needs to be addressed by 3M.

@ec Good advice. I took medical leave when my mental health became really bad because of the intense toxicity, harassment, bullying, abuse and more inflicted upon me by my manager and others. EAP did not recommend it even though I used them quite often. I was fortunate a kind colleague in another division recognized I was struggling and recommended I go on leave. I will always be grateful to this kind colleague.

State paid FML. Mental health issues are covered. Take it. EAP best be recommending it for people with issues.

EAP is helpful in making sure you can get thru your work day productively. If you can’t take it anymore and need to talk to someone NOW, EAP is great in talking you down. They are not meant to be for long term. They can steer you to outside help for the long term.

You are right this is a very serious issue and most definitely a factor at play for many employees. The company will not do anything as it is another way to get people to leave voluntarily. Of course I see it in the teams I work with and in myself. There is a collective grief among anyone who has been around more than 5 years. The grief of seeing the slow death of what people previously experienced to be a great, or at least much better, workplace environment. People need to utilize the still excellent mental health insurance benefits we have to seek out whatever necessary help you may need. The company will not and does not care. The old guard still believes mental health issues are a person’s own fault and demonstrate weakness. Take care of yourselves and one another in the ways that you can without relying on 3M. Certainly when or if it becomes too much, then departing the company is probably necessary. Just maybe wait a few more months as you may want to hold out for severance. I know a few folks that departed on their own recently and were on the proverbial list so they have no idea they left 6 months pay on the table.
