Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

This holiday feels like a wake

More than 20% of the companies non mfg jobs are being cut. Some points:

If they offered voluntary cuts in the factory they would have lost a lot of folks they cannot afford to lose.

If they offered the same package in the US as Europe…they would have exceeded targets.

For involuntary it feels like managers are undergoing the hunger games to protect their employees.

The only people who have not started looking…. suck. They realize their pay is higher than their skills.

The best employees will move on at some point on their own. Since they will not be rewarded anytime soon. This will cripple the pool of future potential leaders.

The only safe business is PCs. It’s the only business AMD cannot win because Intel has built a sales moat around it. Safe means the decline will be slower than other areas. Margins will decline as this moat must be maintained.

I know many of us will help the semi/compute space at other companies. It just won’t be Intel that grows with the rest of semi.

For those work at the fab, one possible destination is TSMC, they are building a new massive facility with accommodations etc at north Phoenix, about 50 miles from the Chandler site. Looks will be a big impact to the local economy there in the next few years.

If you are in design makes no sense to stay at Intel. Your talent can be turned into real impactful products at Apple, AMD,, Nvidia, Qualcomm , Microsoft, Google, Amazon or any of too many to count startups who use foundry.l to turn ideas into real products.

If you at IT, legally HR, sales, or marketing and Young your skills are easily moved to a ton of other places worthy of your talent and with a real strategy and leaderships vision.

If you are FAB, you are SOL, as unless you are willing to relocate and work hard the options are limited and all about continuing to fake it milk it as long as you can. But by end of 2024 it will be ugly.
