Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Waste of talent

I don't agree that all the talented people left Intel a long time ago. Surprisingly, there are still some in this company. Why they allow their talent to be wasted here instead of being properly valued and rewarded somewhere else is another topic. Surely you know a bunch of people whose talent was just being wasted here? However, it is not true that this has become a company without talent.

The machine has become so large and unwieldly the DEI ELTs at the top don't really understand how the org even fits together. mid and upper managers wanting to maintain control put their own self interest and power ahead of the mission and fight to the end to keep as much of their headcount as they can. What manager volunteers to cut his/her/they/xe/hir/it organization or processes that are redundant with the rest of the bloated machine?

True talent at Intel is ruthlessly exploited, stolen and mis-credited by a horde of politician PE/fellows. Clueless non-technical management support this because their own positions depend on having their loyal PE/fellows support their blame games.

Intel also makes the mistake of rewarding mediocrity and overlooking talent. This is sometimes due to ignorance and an inability to distinguish between good and poor employees. It’s also partially due to the poor systems that feed employee performance evaluation. And finally, some portion is attributable to collusion between managers and poor performers out of friendship or family loyalties. If these issues aren’t addressed, expect more talented people to head for the exits.

Absolutely. You can give talented soldiers a mission that is ill formed or impossible, burden them with bad processes and tools and they will ultimately succumb. Does that mean all the troops were below average? Well some of the smarter troops recognize the mission is FUBAR so they transfer out. Yes, some smart troops stay with the mission. The truth is more complex then binary.

Biggest challenges and root causes to me are culture, values, poor or no zbb, decision making. Erosion of those makes it difficult for talented people to deliver. Focus on those items and a good strategy then it is possible to execute well.
