Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Gigapower

I wouldn’t be surprised if some AT&T employees are offloaded to the new JV at a lower rate to save costs.

“No employees will be off loaded to this jo--t venture. These are areas that our union charters don't cover.
The company will have a new premtech/wiretech title to cover all of this.
You are forgetting about the managers involved here that could easily be re-assigned here.

This is just a maneuver to remove expenses off the books! What has not been disclosed is objectives, timetables and costs. They’re going to tap into some of that infrastructure money that was passed last year. I really doubt they have the expertise to pull this off.

Former lineman in our area aren’t working for a contractor placing fiber, it’s temporary work without benefits and a lot less pay. As mentioned by a previous post, things are getting installed incorrectly with other utilities and properties damaged. There is usually one person on the crew who speaks and understands english then interprets to the rest of the crew. For this fiber project they are mostly using subcontractors under AT&T’s Master contractor.

The sub contractors aren’t lasting long or make a profit due to local regulations, ie.. permitting, waiting on locates, having to get permission to missile or bore driveways/roads, daily start/stop work hours or they are having to pay for too many damages. There is a constant ebb and flow of the work getting done and new contractors when they can find them so there is constant work stoppage on the jobs. It’s been a slow process for various reasons.

a lot of the independent isp contractors here are working with the electric utilities or are former lineman that got tired of the layoffs. so i imagine they know what they are doing.

charter and comcast on the other hand are hiring hondurans which are tearing all kinds of stuff up.

I agree with the op. How many people will be offloaded to the jv is the first thing I thought when I saw the headline announcing it.

Msoc has been the best gift to a technician that knows their job. Once you know the rules, you can play the game. God Bless "leadership".....

Our area’s plant is so bad that we wished it was only a carbon or a NID unplugged. Usually depending on trouble description we go halfway and look both ways because there usually is trouble going both ways. Company decided not to maintain the plant awhile back. The cooper plant is working with drops placed everywhere on the road and aerial instead of repairing bad plant and it’s no going to change anytime soon. Cha Ching! We also drive the back roads for safety too, we need to in our metro area.

MSOC was easy to game.
Drive the back roads-even if going hundreds of miles. It's safer.
NID unplugged? Bad carbon? Leave it be for now.
Drive from ped to ped every 20 minutes. Go throw some stickers on it.
3 hrs worth.
Then drive back to the customer's, plug the NID in, and take it to a cable code.
THEY created this, not the worker.
They know where the bucket is, but they have zero idea what I'm doing.
Treating every employee like a criminal and stupid...this is what you get.
Currently at $126K for the year.

Metrics aka MSOC drives bad behavior, the company and managers with direct reports talk a good game about how safety and customers matter. At the end of the day we all know that making numbers and green checks on the dashboard is what really matters because their bonuses are involved. It’s created a toxic environment in many orgs.

Disclaimer: Not all managers or orgs fall in this category but they are the exceptions.

I agree, when we find these frequent safety issues we put in a BPC (Bad Plant Condition) ticket with the Mark-it App for a hazardous condition but are told to quit putting them in by our managers or we will be disciplined.

Managers are forced to respond within a few hours when a hazardous ticket drops but since we are running skeleton crews over wide areas and the load needs to be caught daily is more important to them. Metrics you know take place over safety, they must make their bonuses. We are now covering an area with a 75% reduction in technicians due to attrition and not backfilling.

Obviously a little vicious with the 20 year remark. You get what you pay for, professional quality, safety and installed per bell standards. The other option is a slip shod, accident waiting to happen by some flyby night contractor who hires people off the street with little to no knowledge. But hey if the bottom line is only money but quality and safety isn’t important then use Manuel’s contracting. My family prefers a professional and safe product.

We find loose stand clamps, not connected to the multi grounded neutral or MGN on the pole or grounds ran from nearby power transformers, incorrect down guy attachments etc… same in manhole runs.

i doubt it, theyll probably use contractors. it would take 20 years for ATT's opt's and splicers to run the amount of cable that a contractor can run in a month.
