Thread regarding Cigna layoffs

Generic question

As we know big companies are already laying off people for AI. What about companies like Cigna? Is it matter of time before they use AI as the reason ?

@a7 and it isn't really working. Have you dealt with an AI IVR? Give me a push button menu. They're unhinged and rage-inducing.

I had to call HR the other day and they're based in India. Took over an hour to sort of resolve my issue. They opened up 2 tickets during the call. Yes, it's a race to the bottom, and big companies like Cigna definitely benefit from people like us giving up on trying to solve any issue if it means hours on the phone with someone who doesn't understand

Not at Cigna anymore, but a lot of talk about AI taking over most jobs generally is baloney. Is AI already taking over a fair amount of first-line customer service? Yes, unfortunately. However there is a lot that AI is not able to do well in the foreseeable future.

One indirect reason that AI might be blamed for taking jobs is the "arms race" to embrace AI. It's what everyone else is doing, so it's "safe" and investors expect to hear about your company using it. AI companies have oversold their promises, touting inevitability to prop up their stock prices. Statistically, most of those investments did not pan out. Sadly, companies turn to job reductions to prop up stock prices. So much short-term thinking. Many roles are hired back following big layoffs, just not immediately. Still, the job market is a bit of a void right now for many, but long-term, AI is not going anywhere but it's also not coming for most jobs.

In the digital organization, they are cutting American jobs and sending them to HIH in India. One issue is that many of these new workers rely heavily on AI to write code, often more than the American employees they replace. As a result, because they depend so much on AI instead of strong coding skills, the work can end up costing the company more in the long run. Yet despite this, they continue hiring more people in India.

The most awkward moment happened about 3 months ago when a coworker of Indian descent who was born in the United States said to me, “They’re sending our jobs to India.” I honestly didn’t know how to respond to that.

Huh? It's a matter of time? Look around.... it's already happening.

Cigna is transferring button pusher jobs to India and expecting the remaining Americans to pick up the slack by utilizing AI.

This is true for every major corporation.

I don’t think it would be much longer. I also think they will lean more on outsourcing as the reason and not make it fully AI. I think it’s embarrassing they are trying to push it on us when it’s nowhere near ready. I also think AI is lame

They will likely not be transparent enough to provide a legit reason for any layoff, so it may well have already happened here. If not, I suspect it won't be long before it does.

They aren't pushing AI on us like they do for our benefit...
