Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Learning new things at IBM

Some are disappointed in this company and then they start making complaints that aren't quite true! I'm not satisfied with many things here either, but I can't claim that there is >absolutely nothing to learn at IBM<.
Whenever I wanted to learn something new, I could do it here. I'm not trying to defend the company, but let's be fair... perhaps those people should ask themselves who is really to blame if they are not learning anything anymore.

It makes me laugh when i see people on Linkedin bragging they have over 250 hours of training under their belt in one year. That means they spent over 1.5 months in education, not productive work - and they will endeavor to repeat it again this year! Add vacation time, say 3 weeks, and that's over 2 months of non-productive time. Yes, you can argue they are a better employee for it, but do we really think so?

So yes, there is obviously a lot of learning to be had at IBM!

Yeah when Think40 was complemented by SYS40. Uh, really?
That said all Sys40 counted for Think40 so that mostly helped. AND most training including per-release training counted - helped a lot.

That said - IBM IS INCREDIBLY RICH if you're looking to bolster your skills within or before leaving. Think40, O-Reilly (free), Udemy (generally free) is a huge boon to facilitate your development (whether you stay or not). Myself I'm using it to refresh skills (C++, Python) that have advanced since I joined (you know, the myopic tech your product uses).

So "my work" while re-deployed is (as just today discussed with co-ord on re-deplyment) i bolstering and refreshing skills. Easy enough as the Cloud positions, for example, need me to refresh my C++ and Python skills and maybe learn some others. And external the same.

so for all you turkey-breaths bi-----g - make this your own plan (helps reduce angst executing YOUR plan) - and take advantage of all the free education IBM offers as a natural course of business.

Yes agree there is a abundance of potential learning in IBM- but alas they force you to do cr-p badges that mean nothing, or some other agenda that will be out of date by the time you finish. must do 80 hours of training by the end quarter or be put on a pip.
