Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Is my leadership normal?

I’ve been debating this for a while now. For about the past three years, my leadership has told me to make my own job description, come up with my own deliverables, define my own work. Now, within reason, I think this is fine. But even when I ask point blank “what is the priority for me” they have no answer. Is it not leadership’s job to tell employees what they should be working on or am I wrong? Not saying they should outline the process or the work, but at least a specific goal or project?

@1xc I had several managers whose specialty was gaslighting. Sadly, those horrible managers were promoted (currently VPs and SVP) causing more harm to the company. The evil mind games can take a huge toll on your health. I highly recommend you change jobs. no paycheck is worth an early grave.

@c1 My former manager is the queen of gaslighting. She had my head spinning with her mind games and yelling. She picked on me because I knew more than she did in my field (she did not train in my field but felt what I did was so easy anyone could do it). She also refused to respond when I asked her for guidance on my job description after she kept adding new responsibilities to my already challenging job. I sent her the job description I received when I interviewed for the job and asked her to add any “new” items to the list. She refused.

There must be some reason why HR keeps pushing for "pulse survey". Do you mean there is still pulse left in company?? Sh1tty HR.

@12x You hit the nail on the head. Our "leaders" are in this for personal gain pure and simple. BB doesn't care what happens as long as the stock price goes up so he can cash in!

It’s perfectly normal to have anxiety during times of change. For that we have hr series of executive sessions to tell us to be disrupters. Our hr is so amazing. When I grow up I want to be an hr manager. I hope dreams come true.

Unfortunately it happens when orgs get too big or disconnected from “the table.” It’s probably a sign that your leader isn’t in the circle and is merely flying cover. It isn’t necessarily abnormal for 3M but that wasn’t always the case.

Look at this way, you (possibly temporarily) own your own destiny. No one cares to breathe down your back and you work on what you like, that can be justified easily by you. Goals should be a slam dunk. Enjoy the ride. Sometimes it changes quickly.

You need to face the stark reality there is no leadership here. NONE.
It is called management. Actually, mismanagement.
One who leads would not allow this place to go the direction it has. True leaders strive for the betterment of the organization as a whole, not personal gain or stockholders wishes.
Leaders are ones who put others before themselves.
Leaders are not afraid to take responsibility for their actions.
Leaders do not sc--w their people over.
Leaders are not "just doing my job".

@OP Your leadership are not leaders at all.

Google the phrase "the peter principle".

For guidance you might as well go to amazon.com and order a classic Magic 8-Ball

Sounds like a person who is in over their head and who doesn't understand what their group does.

I think that management doesnt know what to do so they let theor direct reports decide so that later they say "I never told them to do that!".

Either clueless leader or nasty leader trying to gaslight you: "why did you do this project? I never asked you to do it?....etc.". A few years ago, my manager was the gaslighting type, it was a very stressful time for me. Fortunately, he was promoted out of my division.

Very lazy of your leadership. It also sets you up for failure. Suggestion, put together what you do with the goals, and make sure your leadership signs off on it. In addition, make sure you have a monthly 1:1, document the meeting and make sure your leadership signs off in the EPR. In case this ever because a legal issue, you need to protect yourself.
