Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

The truth is, we are all replaceable

There is always somebody cheaper. Every company is looking for a way to cut costs. No matter how well you do your job, they'll find someone who can do it for less money, and they won't care about the quality of their work.

So don't be surprised if you suddenly get laid off - the management views us all as very replaceable.

@3gvy

It’s actually culturalist, not racial, and it is accurate.

@2dtd, you flat out said offshore workers "generally do jobs better that American workers" which is flat out racist.
You're probably just one of those sheep who keep repeating things such as "diversity is good" and "we need to solve the immigration problem before securing our borders" with absolutely no facts or reasoning to back it up and plenty that indicates the opposite. You probably also think that certain people aren't smart enough to get ID to vote.

@jju. Reread it a few times slowly. No prejudice from my side. In fact I celebrate the immigrant work ethic and America was built by immigrants.

I’m guessing G.E.D. & University of Phoenix grad?

Simply leave and block all of the correct phone numbers. True peace and also a good life lesson for the bank.

We replace middle aged, middle class American with H1Bs in his 20's. This is all about age. We do not need to hide the average age in finance and tech anymore.

Yeah, there is always someone cheaper but that doesn't mean they can replace you. There's no way they can find someone with identical skills, experience, motivation, etc.

@ssq+,
You tell us to drop the prejudice then spew prejudice views against Americans? You're pretty special.

H1-B employees work stateside and generally supervise workers in India in their own time zone. No real impact on American jobs despite the paranoia here. Get to know them and drop the prejudice.

The offshore workers save a ton of money and are really valuable assets. Generally they are repetitive Operations workers and yes, they generally do jobs better that American workers because they don’t feel that they’re above the work. It’s a cultural thing.

Well there are many H1Bs that earn a pretty good sum, so I don't know if H1Bs really reduce costs as many people claim.

This is actually why H-1B workers are so valued. Don’t do the knee jerk downvote. It’s the way that the bank can survive. It’s a global economy and it’s in the interest of all employees to keep the bank financially stable.

At BNYM, the issue is a little complex now. They can’t hire people on time or won’t get the support to hire more and that will impact how clients are serviced. I wouldn’t put it past them to fire me and hire someone 30k cheaper but for many jobs, it takes months to learn the organization and how our systems work. The company has no high time preference.

True. What frustrates me and many others is how they cheap out on all of us & these executives who are also very replaceable Continue getting record bonuses year after year while cutting staff and benefits of the remaining staff.
