Target's Rank - WSJ - The 2026 Best Companies for the Future

The Wall Street Journal evaluates how leading US corps stack up in 6 areas: AI readiness, innovation, talent readiness, financial fitness, resilience and agility.

Target ranks #288 overall with an Overall Score of 48.1, placing it 10th out of 18 Consumer Discretionary Distribution & Retail companies. Its strongest factor is Resilience Rank #39, which is a strong score and reflects the durability of the business model. Innovation is #183, but the rest of the profile is weaker.

The major drags are Talent Readiness #438, Agility #330, Financial Fitness #314, and AI #304. Strategically, Target screens as a resilient retailer, not as a future-ready platform. The ranking suggests it has brand and operating durability, but lacks the AI, talent, agility, and financial profile that would move it into the leadership tier.

Lack of talent readiness Is legitimate due to the focus on promoting those who lack any real skill and fit the creepy Target mould. Typically white women and a few lucky white men. Throw in a token few people of color and diversity who have sold their souls to the almighty Bullseye.
