Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Indispensable at work

I agree that more or less everyone here is replaceable, we are just a number here, but it is not true that there aren't those who've made themselves almost indispensable. They are relatively few in number, but there are such examples. Have you tried becoming an irreplaceable employee, that is, one who is not so easily laid off?

@OP, really?
Never have I ever tried to do something that made me indispensable. Quite the opposite, actually. I'm a developer and go to great lengths to ensure things are well documented, straight forward, easy to maintain, easy to test, are difficult to utilize incorrectly etc, etc. I pretty much ASSUME that the person touching this system next will not be me. And that's well beyond things that are required such as runbooks and recovery plans.

Eh. I put in my time & log off when my time is done. I’m not licking peoples boots and putting in all kinds of extra time when I don’t get paid for it.

If everybody took this approach, the bank would show us more respect because they would be forced to

I thought I had accomplished that to the degree achievable. It was breathtaking the speed with which the org turned on me, and without cause.

And that’s not an attack on BNY Mellon (though certainly not an endorsement…).

It can happen to anyone at any time as the players change and you find yourself in the way of someone’s ambitions. It just on the wrong side of a strategic change.

But the best thing you can do is strive to make yourself as irreplaceable as possible and be nice to everyone.
