Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

Development days

Anyone else attending these BS development days? They seem to offer nothing of value. On one hand they tell us to up skill and to shoot fly the stars, even though you need to have a buddy up top to climb the ladder. On the other hand the are low key hinting at replacing everyone with AI in the long run.

@v5 listening to a speaker on a Teams call is not development.

@v5 development has zero to do with promotion here. It’s who you know and what box you check.

@bc Might be a good opportunity to pause and ask what it takes to get to those positions. A lot of the personal development classes are exactly what it takes. Moving up is not about being a better technician. In fact, it's about letting go of that side and embracing "administration and politics". If you aren't attracted to such things, "moving up" in a large-company environment may not be for you.

@dv I see a lot of negative downvotes here. I'd agree with the OP. To many technical staff, soft-skills feel like a waste. And maybe in your first years, you do want to focus on tech. But later in your career, having built those skills and habits are invaluable. I've never stopped in my long career trying to improve who I am as a person, which benefits me both on and off the job.

I’ve been here over a decade and keep a positive outlook. Look forward to any free training offered. Sure I could lose my job due to AI but that doesn’t scare me. What scares me seeing so many people depressed, having high expectations and knocking the company. The company doesn’t owe us anything. Its what we make of our job.

Climbing the ladder requires building relationships, being visible. You can either be low level or fight to move up. Its not fun but sometimes it can be rewarding.

The training was not good. We need actual training tied to our jobs and not generic motivational speeches.

@d1 if the idea of developing yourself is threatening or controversial you can always leave…

@b8 I don’t recall anyone saying the entire week that we’re the ‘problem’. This sounds like maybe you should talk to someone?

For us low level employees, it’s a cruel joke. The jobs that are posted are way above us. The only thing I expect in the future is a pink slip.

I like it because all my bullsh-t meetings got cancelled “for dev days”, so I can get some actual work done.

It’s just a big circlej--kfest where they read each others LinkedIn bio’s and tell us we’re the problem.
