Is this allowed at all? I know we aren’t allowed to use the company’s laptop out the country, but if I need to do some work abroad, would I get in trouble if I connect my personal laptop through VDI?
I would take a week vacation but also work a week remotely. Is this something that should be disclosed to my manager?
Are there any countries where I can’t do this?
@ev Look for the "TIAA Laptop and Technology usage outside your work countriy" article in GetIT. It does mention that working remotely includes a TIAA laptop, VDI and a mobile device.
@cm it is “dog slow” from personal experience. You do realize that people can have varying degrees of experiences? But you do you internet warrior.
I’m pretty sure my coworker went to russia last year and worked there through VDI for a a few weeks with no issues.
I never heard about this being true for bringing your own personal device and using VDI, only with bringing TIAA’s laptop.
@c7 is entirely correct. You need to request approval from HR or you put employment at risk.
And those who say vdi is dog slow don’t know what they are talking about. Our entire India office uses it. Zoom can have some lag, but everything else is fine.
You would need HR approval to work offshore if you aren't on a work trip. There several articles available that will explain this.
I agree. It is doable but will be painfully slow. Like dialup over VPN.
Also... why can't TIAA associate take actual PTO. Everyone I worked for or with were out of pocket on PTO. Like not me I check out completely. Well I mean as of an hour ago I am completely checked out and looking for a new role in Denver...
If you are important enough to the company, you wouldn’t be asking this question here. Why can’t you take 2 weeks of PTO and not work?
And to add add’l context, expect your connection to be painfully slow. So much so you’d be better off NOT working. It’ll be a futile effort, believe me.
