Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Don't leave Intel unless you really have to

People are learning the hard way that grass is not always greener. I am not an Intel cheerleader, I just know that some people who quit are not as satisfied as they were hoping they'd be once they left. They allowed themselves to lose the seniority they had at Intel to become the new kid on the block at companies that are not much different than this place. My point is that if you're not fully certain that you are not going to be met with the same conditions, don't rush to leave. Especially in the current economy.

You will definitely learn more by leaving. Intel’s large environment is slow moving, which encourages the status quo and thereby limits driving and learning new approaches. Seeing how other organizations operate (some even being worse than Intel!) is illuminating and the knowledge gained is useful.

I left until two years ago, and could not be happier. Within a few months, I could tell that I had been brainwashed by the fear-based culture and just sad environment. I’m so happy to be gone. And I’m kind of embarrassed I was ever even there.

Depends on your available options frankly and that vairies by country. I would agree if you currently have a good WLB when your move jobs you'll have to sacrifice that for a while until you're ramped and have a better idea of the work culture and how to balance around that

My guess is that if you can’t find a better place than Intel, you are very very mediocre and can’t cut it elsewhere.

Good advice OP. Intel has best WLB and after Pat compensation is also comparable to Apple, Nvidia and Qualcomm. Let's milk intel as much as possible. Why leave intel and jeopardize your career as well as WLB?

The grass can be green elsewhere, but it also can be browner. If your first exit point sucks, you can always move again!

I think this is a big “it depends.” If you have a well established reputation at Intel and cushy WLB, this advice may be good. If I leave for another company, I would expect to have to work far longer hours, so I’m in no rush.

Seniority has never been worth much at Intel. You have to keep getting better and better to stay. Not anymore really.

Left Intel, can confirm grass is much greener at the competition. I no longer wonder if most of my colleagues have a mental illness or anxiety disorder.

If you leave Intel, you will have to do real work, and be passionate about it. if you don' have that, you should stay at Intel. The grass is not greener if you can't rekindle that passion.

Let's be real. Intel pays way more than you deserve. No doubt money is way better, but at what cost? All in all, I can confirm grass is WAY greener on the other side despite lower pay. Think of it as sanity tax.

Having left, yup it is greener on the winning side.

What are you doing working for a fanatical leader?

What are they not satisfied about? Can you be more specific? At least their RSUs should not be underwater.

Wow, OP that may be the worst job advice ever. Just be miserable here because you might be miserable somewhere else too. Stop taking the Xanax and fix your life for real. Seniority doesn't mean much any more and could actually put a target on your back. Interviews are a 2-way street. Ask the right questions instead of blindly going into a new job. If you aren't happy in your current job than look for something new. You spend way to much time at work to be miserable at it. The misery will spread into other aspects of your life too. Fix it, don't endure the pain. I do agree with being careful in this economy, that part of your comment is right.

I left intel a few years back and honestly the grass IS greener. Even within semi, other companies put more emphasis on good engineering practices as opposed to intel management heavy attitude. Also, much better work/life balance.

Summary: if you are not happy then find something else! You only get one career.

"They allowed themselves to lose the seniority they had at Intel" this is the key sentence, most senior G8+ Intel employees are political sc-m and will be swiftly unmasked as such in any real company. I know tons of G6 and G7 ex-Intel employees (I am one myself) that are doing great at Nvidia, AMD, Apple, etc. and getting much better pay, promos, etc. Intel is only generous with you if you are a political hack, brown noser, etc. The hard-working employees doing 90% of the real work get stuck in the lower grades until they either quit or are pushed out. That is the Intel way.

@OP... what are you some manager trying not to loose more people? Or maybe some HR lacky? I'd bet there are even more happy ex employees out there.

If the grass is greener it's probably taking a lot of hard work to keep it green.
