Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

The Silent Treatment

I worked for other large companies in the West and the Midwest prior to joining GN&T in the Northeast. My Western and Midwestern bosses were friendly and would greet me, ask me how things were going, make small talk etc…

My Verizon GN&T were the complete opposite. Hardly ever greeted me, didn’t make conversation about work or anything else. One ED wouldn’t even answer if you said good morning if you happened to be riding in the same elevator on the way to the office. This silent treatment makes for a pretty unpleasant working environment.

I’m curious what other people’s experiences are like. Is this a Northeast thing? A Verizon thing? Or what? I’m an introvert and I’m not seeking to start long conversations but greeting someone back is basic courtesy.

It's South-Asian style. My boss, and his boss and the boss above - all of them - don't give a cr-p regarding individual contributors, they don't care, they never ask how anyone's doing...

@bc I am a union guy and the some things the union grieves is pathetic and a waste of time. But, I guess it is to justify getting some of the useless stewards to do something.

How about management all the way to the top take a pay cut.

@ay Unfortunately, I go back to NYC in the '80s - it's sad but true. A union member can grieve ANYTHING! I sat in on one where my supervisor refused to allow her people to listen to the radio.

@ae Is that your stereotype of African Americans?

How many or what percentage of strangers do we need to address with a hi, to meet the standard of common courtesy? Its a nice thing to do, nothing else, and its not a bad thing to not do. Do not add any more meaning, you own self-defined expectations is creating your bad day. Not someone not saying hi.

Again, not saying hi, is not a direct negative action towards you. Its nothing.

To expand the OP's topic. Verizon has many folks with different definitions of common courtesy. Maybe racial differences, but regional differences are more common. In any work environment, busy folks skip addressing others, because they are busy and nothing else.

I also work in the northeast in GNT and can confirm this place is weird AF. The culture here is bizarre and hostile. For no reason.

@ab I’m the OP and I was ROFL after reading your sarcastic little comment. They say laughter is the best medicine so thanks for that!

They're busy bean counting in their heads on how to maximize their bonuses and stock options while dividing less pie of the budget to their worker bees. Do not bother them.

The culture has changed significantly over the years. It wasn’t always like what you see today. Speaking as someone who’s worked in GN&T (now N&T) for years in Northeast Area. Lots of organizational name changes coming as well.
