IBM "popped"? Well, it's still up a shedload on 18 months ago. And it fell because it's being eaten by AI. They are facing Armageddon. AI is an issue for sure, but it is just magnifying IBM’s existing problem, which is cloud.
IBM’s stuff (hardware for sure, but services too) is still heavily weighted to on-prem. Sectors that demand on-prem (banking, etc) are big on IBM, but even they are starting to flirt with cloud. The economics of “just putting it all on AWS” are starting to finally outweigh concerns about cloud security.
Unless IBM pivots pretty dramatically, they will be on a death spiral. Quantum might not be enough to save them.
All the talking heads on CNBC etc are trying to explain this...not much to explain, all of tech has at least 20% to give up on the next hint of not-awesome news.
