Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Warning for upcoming experienced hires

Don't be fooled by the lie "career is one designed to last". More positions are being moved to low-cost centers in India and Malaysia. As an experienced hire, you will be treated as an outsider and your experience won't be valued here. You will be ranked with your supervisor, department managers, and those who have been in the company for 10+ years. They need you to fill forced low buckets. You will probably be fine in the first year, but they will take credit for your work, gang up on you, marginalize you, and put you in the NSI/PIP bucket for made-up nonsense reasons most likely in 2 or 3 years. As many others mentioned in their posts, PIP is designed to fail especially for experienced hires. But your supervisor won't mind humiliating you again in the PIP process and squeezing the last drop out of you before you are terminated. Don't trust anyone here as they will backstab you whenever they need to keep their good rankings. If you still have a job now, keep it and don't switch to this toxic hellhole. If you have to take this job for any reasons, keep looking for a new one.

As an experienced hire (a label they remind you of constantly), I agree with what many people have already said: you never get the opportunities that fresh graduates do, and the expectations placed on you are unrealistically high.
I had worked at a few companies before joining, and even during the interview I noticed how aggressively they tried to fish for details about my past projects including things I explicitly told them I could not disclose.
After joining and networking, I ran into several campus hires we had interviewed — and rejected — at my previous job, some not even qualified for internships. They told me the same thing I felt: the XOM interview was much easier.
Being involved in interviews here, I’ve not seen experienced candidates turn down XOM offers. No matter how many warnings they get, the brand name and the high base salary pull them in. And the rest… well, the rest becomes history.

EXxonMobil is the only place where constant reference to experienced hire label is made. Everywhere else you are just someone who works there like everyone else.

This is true. What's really odd is that they hire us for our deep expertise in an area and then we-ponize that against us. We're described as being career limited or niche. And managers get a free pass in ranking. The assumption is always that if you have people reporting to you, then you must be better than an individual contributor. Sadly, I am the only one in the extended commercial/VMO team that knows anything (and can make logical decisions) about the industry we manage, but I get zero recognition for keeping the entire ship afloat. Can't wait to get out of here.

Be at ease that the days of being a sparkly cherished chosen “home grown Exxon” employee are long behind us - the world has evolved and the designation of being an Experienced Hire is now coveted in KL or India. I hope you made some solid earnings in those years!

I was treated as an outsider from day 1 to the day I resigned almost a decade later. It’s telling when after 8 years, your supervisors still refer to you as experienced hire as if you don’t belong. The supervisors collude amongst their buddies against you. I’ve also been ranked against one of my manager who also took credit for my work. At the same time, they continue to squeeze for more and more. …

It’s a lonely place to work
