Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Question: how long can one be out with mental issues?

I know of someone who has been out for many months due to mental issues. Isn’t there a limit to how long you can be out or can you be paid indefinitely for this? As a woman, I am fine with maternity leave but this seems subjective.

@vm don’t give out bad information. Short term disability is up to 26 weeks before LTD kicks in; and STD is not paid by an insurance company. SMH.

@ba typically, us employees get sick days and if you need more than a few in a row (like 5 or so) you apply for short term disability and are paid from an insurance company. Then if it goes over another amount (like 5 weeks or so) your long term disability covers your pay. When selecting benefits each year us employees choose to accept the standard long term disability insurance that pays 50% of your salary if you're disabled or you can upgrade for a few dollars a month to receive 80% if you're disabled. I'm not sure the exact numbers today...

I think I know what she is implying: what if the person out is faking it and NOT truly mentally ill???? When I worked for another financial institution, there were a couple people definitely faking it-they admitted as much just to get more time off.

Why is this even a question? Are you too lazy to read the employee handbook for your region or to ask Eliza? Is there a difference between types of mental illness. I wonder what you think about postpartum depression. Questioning one’s illness is immoral.

It’s understandable to wonder how these programs work, but it’s important to avoid assuming that because an illness isn’t visible, it’s less legitimate. Some of the most disabling conditions are invisible.

As a woman, you are “fine with maternity leave”. Unless you’ve had a c-section you are pretty much fine to return to work a few days after having the baby. So in your eyes it’s fine for someone be granted leave when they are healthy to care for a newborn but you would rather an unhealthy person be in the workplace with an illness, mental or otherwise. I’m sure the environment we are all in has increased mental illnesses and if someone can be granted leave to care for a physical ailment, they should absolutely be granted the same right with a mental ailment. In addition, if their mind is in need of help, do you really want that person in the office working on financial matters?!!

To add, I am not saying I disagree at all with parental leave. I’m just making a point on the difference and comparison made by OP.

If a doctor certifies someone as unfit to work they dont have to explain why. Bny will refer to their own doctor to verify the absence.
Its very difficult to get doctors to keep signing you off sick. No one is pretending to be sick with mental issues.

This is sickening. How are you going to insinuate that a mental illness is lesser than any other illness. I could push back on you and say that pregnancy is a choice and can be planned. Mental illness isn’t and can’t.

The leave for a mental illness follows the same leave policy as any other illness (short term leave/ long term leave).

Keep pushing your narrative and you’ll wind up with someone having schizophrenic episodes sitting next to you instead of taking necessary leave for hospitalization and therapy.

People like you represent the toxicity within this company. You let RV win. You seriously want to berate someone for taking a medical leave or accommodation because the company is mandating you be in office. You are fortunate that you are healthy and not dealing with a mental illness.

@ad Mental illness us not subjective and it’s sad that people even dare to question it. No one knows the battles that people may be silently battling. Be kind!

OP here. I am not in management and have no idea what you are alluding to. I really was just curious about the difference between someone US based out on leave and someone overseas out on leave (I am from overseas).

Some people are legit and some people play the system; it all depends.

Question: If you're a manager and post publicly an hour or two after receiving an update email containing confidential employee health related data from Sedgwick (BNY's leave firm) about a situation inaccurately - just how big a lawsuit do you think you've opened BNY up to?

Different regions have different regulations on issues such as this.

At my old place of employment, there was a gal whose marriage was on the rocks as soon as it started: she was out for 9 months fully paid because she was “bereaved” over it! I guess it depends on how you buck the system and if you know a good quack doctor who can fill out phony notes that you are too “ill” to come back just yet.
