Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

Short-term thinking

Push out the older, more expensive workers and bring in younger people at lower salaries might sound like a great idea, but there's a problem with that plan. The new hires are all about protecting their personal time and sticking to exactly what their job description says. They're not going to fill the gaps or do the extras that the veterans used to handle. And they'll leave as soon as something better comes along - as they should. When the experienced people are all gone, there won't be anyone left who knows how to keep things running.

I know from my previous recruiter as I came in yrs ago as a temp. That they are hiring temporary positions so this tracks. He said they have received and increased amount that is why they sent surveys to previous hires recently.

@bh Well said. I don’t know how long it will take but all of these large corporations will have to do a reset and go back to paying professionals, in what used to be high paying roles, what they are worth.

People in some cases are taking out student loans for bachelors and masters degrees and now, I think, these corporations are trying to see just how far they can push the threshold line, in reducing salaries, before the employees will cry foul and not take it, and choose mental health and personal life over salary and materialism.

You can only push people so far before they say enough is enough and begin to push back.

yeah ‘cause my personal time is my personal time, TF. the older generation needs to understand there is no gold star earned for working yourself to death. burnout is not a flex.

34 yo millennial here. been here almost 10 years.

we’re not working ourselves into an early grave. we’re not overcompensating for lazy a-s incompetent teammates. there is more to life than work. work is not our entire lives and does not define us.

they want to work done, they staff appropriately.

sorry not sorry.

look at it a bit differently. I don't think age discrimination is their thought pattern here at all. When decisions are made based on employee ID numbers, age isn't even in the picture. It seems much more tied to performance and tenure. Sometimes people stay with a company so long that they lose their motivation or lack the resources to move on, which is exactly why things like a VSP (Voluntary Separation Program) are offered.

At the end of the day, any company facing financial issues is going to look for the most cost-effective options—and what feels like a low salary to one person might be a great opportunity for someone else. This isn't personal; it's a structural business move driven by rising healthcare costs and the need for financial cuts.

@OP The sad thing is the company or the people who run it DON’T care! I agree the younger generation should stand up for themselves! When people say oh these young kids don’t want to work, no they want to work just not at the ridiculous pace of not taking care of themselves. I am a “seasoned” employee however the absolute ridiculousness of pushing us to do more and more every day is getting out of hand. In the past week our team has received no less then 3 emails or chats about staying focused or pushing harder lets knock it out the ballpark when the VSP looms over our heads! The tone deafness is loud!

I applaud the younger workers for standing up for themselves. They don't want to be exploited. You are paid to do your job, not to clean toilets, take out the garbage or pick up laundry for managers.
