For anyone impacted or just good at sniffing it out, what were the signs major or one off layoff was coming?

Reorgs and shuffling the workforce internally often come before layoffs. Those at the VP level will know months ahead about planned layoff. They'll negotiate with other VPs to move people around between orgs to minimize or maximize their losses, whichever benefits them the most. Directors and below are mostly kept out of the loop with these decisions, and they have no real power to avoid layoffs other than communicating up what their teams are doing.
If an org is too big, it becomes a target. Core ONTAP teams are often shielded because their directors and higher leadership understand that more members make it harder to justify costs. Every few years we might see a higher level engineer or technical director get cut from ONTAP, but that product and those teams are generally protected by the product they work on but also their leadership knows the game. So what you'll see is teams, good or bad, being moved around through the FY, and when layoffs come, it'll always blindside you as the employee. Be afraid if your team is getting moved to new orgs at random.
Unfortunately we're all just pieces in the chessboard and the VPs and directors move us around. We're no better than livestock to them.
I hear there’s plans for more cuts. The last layoff was just part of the total FY cuts and more likely in November. I am starting to hate working here. I’ll be stressing over if I am let go around Thanksgiving and then celebrating if I’m not. What a shhiity way to live. Not sure if it’s better elsewhere though.
