Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Ford has become a monument to bureaucracy

The company is so top-heavy that management layers seem to outnumber the people doing actual engineering. Many of the best engineers—the ones who lived and breathed problem-solving—have long since left. What remains is an army of title-holders more interested in PowerPoint presentations, meetings, and career advancement than engineering.

The result is predictable: a growing shortage of genuine technical expertise and an organization that often struggles with problems that competent engineers should be able to solve routinely. Too many of today's so-called engineers couldn't design a simple cardboard box without forming a committee, scheduling a dozen meetings, and asking management for approval.

@j3+1kxyr77bx said it perfectly.

Non-management types need to understand that program management and process adherence are what keep a company on track and successful.

in spite of the F150 lightning not selling, it is astounding that they got that vehicle thru all the ford bureaucracy and came out with a high quality truck. lacking range of course. but it really did what it could with the tech of the day. that truck was not an engineering problem, it was a target market problem (product direction letter, type of thing, bad product planning).

Leadership at all levels share this issue, but one real bottleneck is project management. Too many PMs act like they know better than the technical teams they’re meant to coordinate toward a common goal.Even when they’re right about misalignment, they rarely explore why. Instead, they isolate teams and dictate. Autocrats without the “auto,” without the “crat-ense,” but with plenty of rat.

Too many things went wrong, thanks to the stoopidity of the Ford family, particularly Bill. AM was the only good CEO we had in the last 25 years, probably more. What was Bill's decision? Sending him packing a year before the end of his contract. Mark Fields, who was imitating AM (because he realized that AM was a good CEO), was also let go earlier because he didn't embrace the full BEV path.

7-8 years later, the company posted over 40 billions with a B dollars of losses due to BEV, Model E division was reabsorbed into the company, and I have not heard a peep from management about the big sc--w up, not even to say they were wrong. What are we doing now? What Mark Fields was saying a decade ago (hybrids).

Now, if you see that happening at the CEO level, is easy to imagine what went down in the engineering levels of the company, where the employees are not paid millions of dollars annually, nor they have contracts with golden parachutes. The best, the average, and the below average employees were laid off, or they decided to leave. The few remaining are not motivated to work, nor to correct the mistakes that pop up frequently to avoid a confrontation with managers (ask me how I know).

So how the infinite wisdom of our managers and overlords solved this? Hiring ten times the number of engineers in the LCCs, each with 1000 times less experience than the ones being replaced. So what else came from the butts of our dear LLxs, sorry, from their mouths? It is hard to tell the difference with that much sh!t pouring out. Well, they think replacing knowledge with processes is the way to go, so now the new unexperienced hires have too many documents to read, too much to learn, and very few of those documents are updated. What could go wrong, right?

Sell the Ford shares, save money, put your hands in teh air and be ready for the ride...

Ford is now reaping what they've sown, and it's only going to get worse over time.

I wish that I could muster up the energy to care, but as long as 'dem direct deposits keep rolling, 🤷‍♀️

@OP too little too late due to management and their obsession with brown-nosers. ENJOY! Going down. And I don't mean the elevator!
