Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Has Oracle turned into a launchpad for other companies?

People join, learn the ropes, build their resume, then leave for something bigger. I've been noticing it more and more.

That's literally every big company ever.

Job hopping has been around for a long time. While frowned upon time, it has become a critical skill to develop and deploy strategically. Getting pay increase at Oracle is near impossible; best way to progress is to jump the ship.

"I’m hoping to get laid off in the next round and using the severance to help float me as I get my start up off the ground (I live outside US so it’s not going to be just 4 weeks lol)"

Worked for me!

@bs cloudera, Nutanix, workday, simplismart, MythWorx… recent superstar companies spawned by Oracle alumni are fewer these days to be honest- but many companies are run by them

@c0 no, these are my original thoughts. I have no idea who Andrew Yang is but he must be a smart guy.

@ak is this from Andrew Yang's article. It's almost verbatim

Can you name one company that has been successful and formed by former Oracle people? That is not a consulting company

This has been true since 70s, buckle up buttercup. You are expendable. Get over yourself. Dust of the resume, fluff it with cut and paste from similar LinkedIn applicants and jump.

It isn't just at Oracle. The career paradigm has shifted. Formerly getting a job at a good company, developing a career, and finally retiring is a thing of the past. The idea of staying with a company long term has become risky. Companies have become unreliable to long term employees because at some point you become too expensive. Experience isn't valued. People are being let go at vulnerable times in their lives. A new career skill is now required where you need to be aware of your surroundings and constantly watch the environment where you work as well as the job market. 3-5 years at the same job will make you a long term employee and you should be looking around. It will probably also be the only way that you will get promotions and pay raises. Keep your skills and resume up to date. Reduce your debt and increase savings.
