Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Nobody wants to work anymore

Everyone wants to work at home and get big bonuses and comp. and watch The View in between conference calls. Or then be on your DEI Committees that don't increase shareholder value or the stock price. Go Woke Go Broke.

@2kiv+1l28FJP8 And then they went home to their houses that cost $38K, and largely retired with a pension in this industry.

Then technology changed, there was belief folks could achieve greater work life balance in the future- in reality we work more hours now than they did, without the benefits of hoping to achieve “the American dream”

Gen X here. The hardest workers were the "greatest generation" who were older when I was entering the workforce. They would work LONG hours with no complaints or anything. Was kind of worried that 10 hours days were the normal. LOL!

These things are arbitrary, but some use '65 as the beginning of Gen X. Guess what year the CEO was born? There's plenty of boomers with the company as well of course, but fewer every day. In any event the Battle of RTO isn't about age, it's about dinosaur mindset. That could be in a 25 year old or a 75 year old. More likely in the latter group, but still, it could be any age.

@1trl+1l28FJP8 You are right there are some leading at WF. That is the high end of boomers, we have loads of upper 50s early 60s leaders

Gen X has collectively done a ton of leading, including here at WFC. Most of the execs aren't 70. Of course these guys are epic fail, but their age isn't the issue.

Because gen X has largely never been in charge. They are silent as a result of the boomers overstaying their welcome in the workforce. Boomers don’t/can’t retire, Gen X doesn’t/can’t have a chance to lead

Why do we automatically go to the BOOMER generation? Did we forget that GEN X is between the Boomers and Millennials?

I like to work and work hard with results to show for it. In fact, didn’t the company blow profits out of the water during the time that THEY IMPLEMENTED WFH? Weird, it’s almost like people were happier and more productive or something. I don’t like sitting in traffic for a few hours a day, going into a large, cold box that smells like mold. A box where I’ve literally watched mice stumble around and die from poison in the walls. Zero point to it, WFH is a cost savings and collaboration is not a thing in my LOB. In speaking with older generations that generally loved it…sorry but it kind of seems like you hated your families and wanted an escape.

@1ssb+1l28FJP8 I work at wells, I have plenty of first hand examples of failures from the older generations on a daily basis. Sorry your generation has eroded all civility in the workplace, a lot of us are jaded for good reason, I’m sorry you can only see your generation in a positive light which that is unrealistic given the current state of things

I’m glad you came back to me, but your reasoning is assumptive and biased. Your parents and grandparents must have failed you in some way for you to have such contempt for older generations.

Unfortunately, you are not representing your own generation in a positive light. I hope you grow as you get more years under your belt. Good luck.

@1xwm+1l28FJP8 Because most of the inane whining about people not wanting to work comes from the boomer generation.

You also have the unfortunate ailment of sharing the generation with the majority of the leaders that are pushing RTO. Your generation failed at improving the workplace in any meaningful way

Why the hate to the boomers? You both make good points and then diminish your POV by demeaning an age group.

This is executive leadership attempting to put their finger on employees and exert their control. I would consider it a “class issue”, not an age issue. I’ll bet if you took a poll, age has no bearing on who wants RTO vs who wants WFH. Boomers have all put in their time in the office and we want out freedom and balanced lifestyle probably more than you.

My point is that employees should band together as a strong united front against RTO. Those who attempt to divide us only weaken our stance.

It’s 238,600 employees against 100 Execs and Managing Directors (at most). If we can’t win this one there’s something wrong. Stick together.

@nom - don’t be dramatic. The wrongs of this company and industry are too numerous to count, but wage slavery is a whole different ballgame. By far the biggest complaint on this board is being asked to go to an office a few times a week. True victims of slavery (and wage slavery for that matter) would laugh at that

@tvu look up the term "wage slavery" and tell me you haven't read situations that the term applies to on this board. There's no need to be pedantic about word selection.

@sqf - please don’t cheapen the term slave. You can hate your job, but have the maturity to recognize it’s a business relationship - you do a job and get compensated. If you don’t like it - no one is forcing you to stay for zero compensation. Nowhere close to actual slavery

You don't want to work and rather be rich? Who does not? You want to make CEO money but don't want to work? You want to work on your own terms? Well you are not rich so you can work hard, get rewarded for it, live within your means then at some point you may be able to do what you want. I think you need to take a long look in the mirror and frankly man the F up or stop wishing and complaining.

Stop spamming Gramps. You've started 3-4 threads like this in the last few days. You're not convincing anyone. RTO is a failed strategy. It already has failed at WF and it will only get worse from here. RTO + location strategy removes about 90% of the talent that we could potentially recruit. Our scandals, which come from in person work behaviors, keep at least another 5% away. We are chronically stuck scraping the bottom of the barrel for that last 5% and fighting other big banks to get it. If our board or OC had any intelligence we'd adopt WFH in every single job where it's possible. Massive reduction in costs, scandals, and HR issues would ensue. Get VDI running well and you could save another mountain of dough and the employees would provide their own tech. Anyway, embracing WFH would result in a huge increase in highly motivated and talented employees that would flock to WF because the other dinosaur banks are stuck in the past.

There you go, that's my case. The OCs case is "because I said so" and BS platitudes that have no bearing on the reality of the situation. They say they want to cut costs and have innovative teams and are doing the exact opposite things you'd need to do to get them. It isn't 1950 or even 1990. It's 2023 and we have a huge opportunity here to beat the competition. We won't do it by emulating old failed models and scraping the bottom of the talent barrel.

I 100% don’t want to work. I also need money. If I had the money I definitely wouldn’t be working doing anything like my job at WF, and might not work at all, who would? Clearly some of our c suite, because I would retire on 2-3 years of their compensation.

There is nothing wrong with not wanting to work, or wanting to work on your own terms. There is something wrong with agreeing to work, and not carrying your weight. Let’s focus on the right things.

DEI doesn’t hurt me. People RTOing or not doesn’t hurt me. Not everything (in life, at work, or on this site) has to be political.

I actually agree, not a boomer. Dei does not add value but I play the game. Same with RTO since those are the rules. I have the choice to leave but would rather stay since most companies are like this one anyway. I work hard because I am wired that way, a days work for a days pay etc. There is more dead weight at WF by volume and percentage than I have ever seen by far. That is where the inefficiency and dysfunction set in. You cannot do anything without needing a pointless non value added review or chasing multiple approvals.

Why does it chap your ar-e if other people don't want to work? Why do they/we have to suffer because you have this overwhelming desire to be someone else's slave for 8 hours a day?

You want to work in a building, go do it, just don't expect the rest of us to show up to make you happy. We're too busy getting stuff done to BS with you and your ilk.

Not specific to WF but in general. When did companies stop wanting to win? Win the customer, win the deal, win the market? Be the best?

Instead they bandaid the broken. Waste shareholder investments on DEI cr-p that offers no return. Everyone in banking got schooled on this cr-p in the early 2000’s

The same ineffective executives move from bank to bank and create havoc wherever they go. The industry has become so toxic. The OCC may have an excellent point in too big to manage, these leaders suck and continue to be rewarded. If we had a true capitalistic system they would wash out.
