The German union has really been tough in negotiations about shutting down facilities in Cologne years ago. They won negotiations, no shutdown, Ford corporate walked.
I predict German engineers will get eye-watering severance packages because of their union.

Unions in Germany are this strong because all companies are so d-mb to accept tax incentives there. With that, they totally own you. These incentives are all tied to a lot of rules and Germany can ask for them to be repaid if you just ditch.
Nokia is a famous example.
