That assumes things were properly set up before COVID, which is a bold assumption. This should be up to the middle managers. They are close enough to the front line to know if it's appropriate or not. Those in the ivory tower in NYC have NO idea.
It is pretty simple. If you WFH before the pandemic, then you should still WFH. If you worked in the office before the pandemic, then RTO. Why does everyone feel they deserve to WFH when they were hired to be in office?
My team is geographically dispersed because the customers are. No matter where I sit, we ALWAYS collaborate by phone and PC because there is no other means to do so. There may be jobs where sitting around with coworkers brings value, this isn't one of them. So again, FRTO, and FCS/SP.
@1dav said, "There are things that can be learned or discovered as you are around coworkers."
Like learning you hate being around people you don't directly work with for no reason other than to make some hand-picked, overpaid do-nothing more wealthy.
Which plants are best in an office setting for absorbing unhappiness?
This isn't about friends though. There are things that can be learned or discovered as you are around coworkers. We have a lot of people that just stick their head in the sand about it though. We have one person on our team that doesn't come in and they are completely disconnected from everyone else and extremely behind the curve.
Any socializing you need can come from other sources than work. Been doing it for years, trust me, it's possible. Wife and I have been fully remote for many years, well, until some useless POS in NYC decided to be an A hole in order to motivate people to quit without severance. FRTO and FCS/SP.
Lol. People who love RTO really are convinced that people want to be around them. LMAO!!!!!
Speak for yourselves. I’ve got enough friends in my life that I don’t need chitchat with co-workers. If given the choice, I’ll pull that rope up with me as I make it over the wall. There’s literally no business value to being in an office when the work can be done digitally. Do yourself a favor and get lives that don’t depend on the water cooler. We’re not working with our hands on a farm or making widgets. Lol. You all probably love to sit in traffic. Sadists.

Lulz @tzi+1lCwBgYf Humans in general all benefit in some way or shape from being around others, we are social by nature. Whether you value that interaction or not is another matter. The only people who actually crave and/or perceive themselves as thriving in isolation have emotional and mental deficiencies that require remediation through medication and therapy. They are not “normal” and regardless of how the woke movement attempts to rewrite the definition of normal, it is certainly not surviving in isolation because you don’t like people.
Children's developing minds have something to gain from going in. Adults that have been WFH for years and are part of geographically dispersed teams do not and never will. FNYC.
