Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Halting Hybrid

Heard that Corporate will be mandating 3 days a week in office now and that they will be monitoring badge swipes.

Not surprising BNY has a toxic culture & awful management.

Retention is bad enough as it is , and they struggle to find replacements because of pi-s poor salary compensation. They’re playing a dangerous game .

What's next? How many restroom brraks you took? Key strokes on your PC? Treat your professional people like children, and you will get in return a childs level of loyality, values, ethics, and performance. But hey C -suite, you really show them who's boss!

Did the bank collapse when we worked 5 days a week from home during COVID and had to put up with lack of space, kids and restrictions ? I remember that they were very grateful at that time? Very short memory.

@qkg+1lFSqsn2 was just trying to have a catchy title, maybe should've called it forget flexibility... But here's my issue, they keep forcing more days, reducing the flexibility. Hybrid is supposed to be about flexibility, if I'm sick one week I shouldn't have to make those days up in the next week or so. Also, the more they monitor and punish us, the more likely they will increase the days. Eventually we will be back to 5 days a week.

It’s also a way to induce people to leave instead of paying for layoffs

@qkg

Why do you feel that the bank still functions?

It’s so true. “Middle Management” consists entirely of forwarding emails down to subordinates who then do the same. This redundancy is so simple a problem that I’d even Roman Regelman could fix it in hours. Of course he too would be one of the displacees.

I left the firm in November to join another bank that had switched to 3 days a week far earlier than BNYM, but to my knowledge, my new company isn't tracking badge swipes and management hasn't really brought up the issue.

Even my manager made a soft agreement with me to come in once a week initially, which was fine, but I'd still appear on a list and despite that handshake, who knows if I would've been penalized with a lesser bonus or other ramifications? you just don't know because even your manager could be overruled. I managed people but when I was last there, I think only your director saw the list, not any managers below them.

Given what I heard about BNYM tracking this stuff, it's like they can't pick anyone to layoff anymore, so they use this tracking system as a way to "get" people and think it will save them some short-term costs. Very devious.

How is 3 days a week NOT hybrid? And how does this bank function with so many id--ts?

My team’s manager announced he “wouldn’t even look at” the swipe reports. As you might expect from a BNYM manager, the day after the first report was issued I got an accusatory message asking why I hadn’t been in office the requisite number of days… typical

They’ve been monitoring badge swipes for a few months now. Your manager gets a report detailing compliance with RTO for each direct report: colour coded, maroon, red, mint, and green, based on amount of swipes per month.
Make no mistake, a firm like BNYM with several layers of redundant management MUST implement RTO and additional reports for RTO compliance in order to justify said existence of those managers.
It is up to you, us, employees, to reject this reactionary as--ult on our small gains these past few years.
I know many Regional Presidents must have realised their entire job consists of forwarding emails we’ve already received from automated servers. They must get warm bodies in seats to justify that big comp package.
If you haven’t been under this yet, consider yourself lucky. All of WM was placed on special 3-day by CK, and managers have been watching the monthly reports.
