Thread regarding Intel Corp. layoffs

Is gfx the last hope for intel?

They are spending on gfx like they think it’s going to succeed. What say you? Polishing a tu-d or diamond in the dumpster fire?

It really has become quite silly. Intel has tried and failed in graphics multiple times over decades... Easily $2B lost on all the efforts. Intel became competitively irrational and fixated on a no win situation.

Jen Hsun said he would open up a can of 'whoop a-s' on Intel back in 2009 and he certainly made good on that promise.

@zyz+1lFYWDhZ Intel was once the largest supplier of graphics (probably still is due to number of laptops sold); just not discrete graphics. In order to have dedicated AI processor, Intel needs discrete graphics. Then later have a dedicated AI processor like Nvidia. Intel will get there.

@bkb

ATI had a habit of dropping support on their GFX cards within a year or two as well, it's one of the main reasons I switched to Nvidia many years ago and stuck with them ever since.

I would never buy an Intel graphics card for one simple reason, regardless of how good or bad technically it is or how cheap it is.

Graphics is not Intel's core revenue source and Intel has a record of abandoning support, especially software drivers and tools, for discontinued product lines. I have a lot of Intel SSDs and motherboards that are still functional but haven't been able to update.

Nobody thinks gfx when they hear the word Intel.

How exactly does Intel plan to change that?

This reminds me of when Intel thought it could just come in out of left field and win the tablet and smartphone markets. The thinking there was based on pure arrogance, and the company brought no real innovation to the table.

Well. Nvidia and AMD polished their turds for a long time to get to where they are. Intel can do the same.
