Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Critique my plan please

I enjoy working in oil and gas. I see no other oil and gas company that is any different from an employee experience perspective. I am in my mid 40's and so I am worried about being fired once I reach my mid 50's like I've seen happen to others. My plan is to upskill through training and apply for jobs which are clearly a promotion rather than a lateral move. Curious what advice others would offer on this plan.

If you make it to 15 years+, but don’t want to stay until 55, can you do early “retirement” from XOM and not take any benefits until after 60? Or do you have to make it to 55 working to enjoy any of the retirement benefits?

@sen+1lGlA7Pd lol wut? Tech companies are super toxic, but they pay well, including a respectable severance when they do (transparently) lay off employees. My biggest problem with EM in the last few years is the blatant dishonesty from the very top, versus the toxic management that’s always been around.

I think you’re on the right track. Be aggressive with your compensation requirements during the application and offer process. You will not have that kind of leverage again until you apply for the next job. If they give you the number you asked for in the application, make up some excuse and ask for 5-10% more. If they give you what you asked for, they can afford to pay more.

My advice during the interview is to take down the names of everyone you interview with and everyone in the group. Pay attention to how they behave, how they seem as people. Look them all up on LinkedIn, are they all legit A-team players? Look them up on social media, are they going to pi-s you off with their politics every second of every day? Overall these companies are all the same, with small differences that cancel each other out. What will allow you to enjoy your job is how much you respect your colleagues.

As much as I do not appreciate current management in XOM, the bigger and older a company, the more toxic the management. That's just how it is. Tech companies are still young, so they haven't gone to our state of toxic-ness, but the recent layoff's kinda a glimse of what's coming.

Generally good idea and it is easy to initially successful doing this. You will likely get hired into a bigger role.

My one cautionary comment is this: With so many friends/coworkers resigning, I saw some folks get really BIG roles. I scratched my head and asked ‘How did that happen?’ as I knew their skill set. But whatever….I was happy for them. I am now checking in, 6mo to 2 years later. About 75% have been fired or asked to resign.

On the flip side, the talented folks that ExxonMobil overlooked do EXTREMELY well.

So know your strengths. Hire into a bigger role, but be careful that you can actually do that role.

I like your plan but there are other O and G that are much better than XOM. I left for Shell and it’s far better.
