If you’re sitting in front of a WF issued windows device, it was imaged using COSMIC. That little icon that looks like a Xmas present in your systray, is the COSMIC agent. It’s what’s responsible for spinning up that device. COSMIC requires frequent constant maintenance or it stops working. WF just laid off the only two engineers for COSMIC. But don’t worry. Leo has your back. Wave works perfectly in all situations. Right?

this sounds like I’m at wf offices. everything in here rings true. wfb is in deep do---o if/when cosmic goes down and stays down.
Wave is horrible. So many issues and tickets being opened and passed back n fourth. They are a reactive company. Not a proactive company. Besides they are talking going to Azure anyways. Same logic as decommissioned Nas servers to get users off and onto HCPA but the long term goal is OneDrive. I would love to talk to Leo myself.

So we keep running on our already outdated local machines? Cool. I've learned that there is no perfect tech stack. Whatever is in place, people will always act the smartest in the room and put it down.
This is not the first time this has happened. A few years back they let all the engineers quit except one on a key trading messaging system. The last guy took PTO, became unavailable. The mo--n middle managers whose decisions created the problem had the developers call an engineer who had quit months before to fix it.

If the remaining engineers can’t get the access required, learn the technology behind COSMIC, and in a short period of time, this could take down the company. If COSMIC goes down without a replacement, you can’t reimage physical windows machines. Wave is at capacity and can’t handle all use cases. Company ki-ler is not an exaggeration. This is all on Leo. His minions tried to warn him, but he was too busy throwing hissy fits when people called him lee-o

Wave has many issues, too many to begin to list.
OSD Imaging is nowhere near ready, not even ready to start testing.
W365 is already running into issues and that hasn't even really started pilot.
Cosmic has been around for over 10 years, has to work to image over 70 different models of desktop/laptops with varying hardware dating back to 2016. With constant patches, BIOS updates, security changes (many times nobody notified of those security changes until it's implemented), other technology changes, and those engineers working on QOL updates it was always a challenge for them.
Upper management cuts a deal on a new REALLY cheap laptop (consumer low grade) to save $25 vs the better built/spec enterprise model. Then get charged $20 for a required barcode sticker to be applied to the laptop.
Makes absolutely no sense to switch to Wave as there are so many issues with it.

@orh+1lK8sxBE Not so fast. Wave (vdi) can’t handle the capacity. We were supposed to be at 75k users by now. We’re about half of that and hit the wall. Vmware (or whatever they’re called these days) is too expensive. Our VDI group was hit hard by the layoff as well. I expect it’s because of win365. So, yeah. Wave’s days are numbered as well
@mdz+1lK8sxBE They were only senior level software engineers. They should have been promoted to principal. What upper management didn’t know (or was blind to) was that they were keeping everything running. Those two COULD have held the company hostage. They had that much power. WF owes them, but they were thrown away like garbage
Unfortunately at WF it is not the people, it is a systemic thing. There are some incredibly talented people involved in tech, lacking is a structure that allows people to thrive.
So many fake product managers and tech managers now that have no clue WTF they are doing, pushing around corporate terms like Agile without having written one script or line of code. Total joke.
New blood is not the answer on the ground floor. Maybe above, but not as much below.
@kqy+1lK8sxBE Yes. In fact, outsourcing has been attempted several times. CM OSD has been in the works for years. But where is it?
Another option is they’re outsourcing the function to a third party that can do it for cheaper than the cost of those two employees, and/or package that service with other tasks, which collectively cost more to do in-house.
If there’s only two of them, and something that important relied on them, I imagine they were pretty highly paid. Is it possible that they already have cheaper replacements lined up and ready to go? Perhaps in India?
WF get rid of something before the replacement is ready to go? Nooooooo, neeeever. 😐 This is a daily occurrence at this company because the people making decisions have no idea how anything works and avoiding transparency/not letting the cat out of the bag more important to them then getting productive things done and avoiding issues.
Sure. Replace it with something better. But only for if you actually HAVE something better. There’s nothing. Yes. There are many replacement projects in the works, but none of them are ready (even after years of development)
If it needs constant maintenance does that not mean it is/was not engineered correctly or being improved? Seems new blood might be good?
