Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Exxon reputation is so low and pips again. It’s been 6 month that my boss is trying to hire someone with experience but all them decline.

My whole group is so over worked and everyone so tired.
How do we think we will bring resources with this scenario???

Experienced people should not come here if you are looking for a long term career. Most of the people I know who were experienced hires (all very good technical people) were put in PIP and forced out. The rest resigned because they were overworked supporting managers who do nothing all day but dream up ridiculous ideas that goes nowhere. There is no career track as they will always be treated as outsiders. The few who survived are absolute suck-ups or dirtbags.

No thanks to that Jackwad (AKA Jack Welch) who was the father of using this methodology to reduce headcount at GE. Now some other Jacka$$ companies (won't mention names!) is copying it and wondering why they can't hire the best and brightest.

In my humble opinion, companies that are truly results oriented should utilize the PIP process as their tool to eliminate the truly low performers (i.e. the ones that are not cutting the mustard), but immune because of their "protected class!"
Let the downfall of the once mighty GE & other chump$ serve as a valuable lesson for everyone else in the future.

Many other sites have trouble hiring also. We lowered our standards so that we can hire from LSU and A&M, but still can't convince engineers from the worst schools to work for XOM. We just about gave up trying to hire experienced engineers.

Reason for not accepting offer, is they heard about our performance and PIP aka annual layoff program. The smart ones have done the research and asked why we adopted a program Microsoft and several others abandoned when they realized the short term natural and lack of collaboration and long term thinking it promotes, microsoft now has a more specific program with 0 as the lower bound and doesn’t blindly make people meet minimum % of employee layoffs annually. Told them Amazon has a similar program and the interviewee replied, yes but they offer generous several, higher compensation, stock and profit sharing so how do you compensate. Also have been told it’s open we are using experienced hires as a patch job with goal of max outsourcing, asked why didn’t we learn from Shell when they realized error of outsourcing at any cost and now keep core groups in all areas and use outsourcing as a complementary service (note Shell has a similar tech center set up). The people interviewing are very informed and I wish them the best wherever they land. Hope this helps.

Each time I tell someone in a public interaction who my employer is, they ask if I’m ok and if I need help finding employment… profits may be high, but the prestige is gone.
