Thread regarding IBM layoffs

Layoffs first week of April???

There have been widespread rumors of massive reduction in force to happen first week of April before the quarterly earnings are announced. Has anyone else heard similar rumors that back this up?

I +1 to the previous post - but not meaning harm.

My 1-1 with redeployment manager is now a 1-2 later this afternoon; schedule for 30 not 15.

I do have active GOM applications outstanding - so was anticipating this- that I have until end of April.

I will update at EOD. And Feel free to +1 this as I'm quite happy about this given my current situation.

invited for a 30 mins call, wind off in 5mins with poor quality video and low level acting -no Oscars to SLMs for heartless acting. Packages to be emailed, have 30 days to find another role.

LOL. You are naive if you think the CEOs office suddenly moved the office hours because they suddenly realized it conflicted with mass layoffs. Original post on April fools day and now the ceo didn’t even know layoffs were happening so had to reschedule his thing. Oh and don’t forget the typical response. I am apparently HR (cause this site is so influential that HR actually cares about it …. Eyeroll).

Well, maybe, but typically IBM does RAs on a Thursday, not a Tuesday. And of course their preferred time is a Thursday before a three-day weekend (like before Memorial Day).

Sooo yeah, I'm a tad skeptical. I guess we'll know shortly.

FLMs were informed today via bluejeans. for large groups it is being done virtually by senior leader on group call (no chat function or participant visibility). Rest of org told tomorrow via same method. Decision is based solely on role and location- Not performance based in any way. Package details to come tomorrow along with FAQs and script for one on one discussions with direct reports over the next few days. We have 30 days to find a role within ibm.

Does this mean FLMs are going to have a full day of 1-on-1’s scheduled on 4/4? Wonder if sensitivity training is required. Anyone seen that movie Up in the Air with George Clooney? Should people prepare by watching that? Or perhaps Cat in the Hat with Jim Carey - the ‘you’re fired’ scene. Do we get Think40 credit for watching those?

Actually, 3/30 in HR was big announcement in too leadership. One top head moving to a small company (25k employees) a big downgrade; she didn’t want to leave. Some HR first line employees were laid off on March 30. You can see it on Linkedin. However, big wave should be next week.

3/30 was not fake news. Management has just gotten so bad they can't even get a layoff together. That was the one thing left IBM could do well. It's still coming.

PIP and redeploy have marched thru IBM over the last 6 months quite effectively. Going from a 282k average for all of 2022 down to 260k average in Jan of 2023 says IBM has been swinging the ax aggressively. The redeploy angle has most likely run its course as IBM has offshored or consolidated almost everything it can to fewer locations thru out NA and Northern Europe and to lower cost countries. RA’s are now the play. This usually indicates an IBM withdrawal or shrinking away from current operations as they push for more revenue per employee (efficiency). Given the criteria of Cost reduction, you can expect most of the cuts to fall on the USA and Northern Europe operations via a 65-35 split. Good luck to all as you should expect IBM to not squander the current industry wide cost reduction fever. Remember the services model 8-10% on shore, with 20% near shore. That’s a pretty ruthless model if you are currently on shore (approx 70k NA and 35k Northern Europe)

It's been the same primary criteria for the last 20+ years .... 1) Age; and 2) Salary

IBM can and has been using PIP to under performers that way they don't have to spend money on severance, the fact makes this round of layoff unrelated to performance.

Some teams were told specifically by their FLM and SLM that these are not performance based decisions and that the main objective of the company is to improve the bottom line and free cash flow. A band-aid fix, yes- but that is why a lot of people, high performing or not, are worried.

If you are high performing and can prove it with checkpoints, reflections, kudos on slack, bluepoint recognitions, managers awards etc why are you worrying?

Looks like many weekly posts almost spreading "rumors" of "huge" layoffs coming... Every week. "Confirmed", "top executive told me", etc...

Me thinking IBM's agents could be spreading such rumors to shake the tree and drop off the weak hands, in combination for "hints" your manager scares you with, etc.

Why? Well it will cost nothing to IBM if you resign and find a new job. Also if you're over 40 it saves IBM a risk of age discrimination lawsuits as by now I think no one will sign off such rights to sue in court, not a mediation, for the peanuts IBM may offer.

Any other ideas for these weekly posts on layoffs coming? Wolf wolf calling to prepare people what will come or to avoid paying for legal litigations?

...and we would not see so many rumors if IBM would just tell people what is going on: when will the layoff happen and what will the severance be?

Best to read the posts and ignore the reactions. It is as if IBM has a team of people ready to react negatively to any post that reflects any message IBM does not approve.

Folks, this webpage is about layoffs...not many people are going to honestly say, "I'm getting layed off after 20, 30, 40 years working to make IBM a success. Thank you IBM! The execs definitely deserve their bonuses!"

IBM would be wise to take advantage of all the layoffs announced by all tech companies... if there is a time they can massively layoffs and not have to hide anything, it is now.

Whomever is selected, it would be wrong again. SLMs and ups are clueless because they have no experiences in leading what they are leading, and I'm being kind for saying this. Some FLMs are clueless too depends on your roles. IBM will soon be full of incompetent folks led by clueless management and the company will not be sustainable. Better run for whatever you find
your passions in.
