When I received the news of my layoff a few months ago, I was taken aback. My reviews were exceeds and meets. Today I see the job that I have posted on the job site. There are additional requirements:
3+ years working with JIRA, writing EPICs and User stories
5+ years Scrum Master or Agile Product Owner
I now realize that the layoff may have been a result of my lack of experience with Agile methodologies.
At the time of the layoff, I was still learning and adapting to Agile, and I feel that I may not have had enough time to gain sufficient experience. Looking back, I also realize that the company did not effectively implement Agile. Instead of allowing for more autonomy and flexibility, the new management used Agile as another form of micromanagement.
As a result, we were frequently in meetings that were not productive and did not contribute to the overall success of the team. The company seemed to prioritize adherence to Agile practices over the actual outcomes of our work.
Now, as I reflect on my layoff, I recognize the importance of continuous learning and development in the ever-changing job market. While I do feel that the company could have done more to support my professional growth and development, I also acknowledge my responsibility to stay up-to-date with industry trends and acquire new skills.
If given the opportunity, I would prioritize gaining experience with Agile methodologies and developing the skills outlined in the new job posting.
