Help pass State level anti-bullying laws

Attention workplace activists joining the rapidly growing movement to push for specific anti-general bullying laws at the State level. Here are some great resources for you all!

Remember that much general bullying is not currently illegal UNLESS it is based on a protected category. Also, the EEOC is understaffed and it is almost impossible to prove intent, even more difficult if you are stuck in an employer-friendly arbitration agreement (they want repeat players, so if the employer is footing the bill for the arbitration to keep proceedings confidential, versus jury trials, do you think employees are in a stronger position than the employer during arbitration??).

Oftentimes, union organizers, or those the employer merely fears are organizing, will get targeted BY managers to try to drive them to quit, since there may be no legitimate reason to outright fire them. If subjected to a "mobbing" campaign, read this book, but ignore the author's advice to introspect as if the victim is to blame for any abuse (most anti bullying organizations argue this is not correct).

Workplace bullying can lead to litigation, so companies should NOT tolerate it by instigating, perpetuating OR tacitly condoning such abuse by tolerating it when they know it is going on.

Employee side attorneys to help with exit packages if victims are leaving non-voluntarily can be located through this organization.

And call up your elected representatives at your State level asking them to sponsor and pass State level anti-workplace bullying legislation that covers even the non status protected forms of bullying. This will make our workplaces safer and more financially profitable and productive. Don't delay. Get on the phone and make yourselves heard to your elected reps today!

Be safe and kind to each other.

Been a manager and a team coach/supervisor. Telling people to do their jobs isn't bullying, but read about the Evan Seyfried case. Poor guy had a psychotic break after months of abuse. No prior mental condition.

For pete's sake, why not allow a prompt transfer? He quit his job, then just lost it.

Now disgrace has been brought to the company, because the very public lawsuit is moving forward (since he had already quit, I thought it was going to get dismissed at first).

Escalated to this over a previous request to transfer that had not yet been granted. Very sad case. One of the more extreme cases, though.

There is allot of bullying at Verizon. My previous boss was a classic example and was rewarded with a promotion when they should have been fired.

Sounds like no one has a clue why legislation would be good.

It's not garden variety bullying most avtivists are trying to outlaw; it's when it escalates to the point of where the Kroger/Evan Seyfried case got to.

Plus, what if your company lays off a bullying victim to shut them up and get them out of there, but they show up really really ticked off one day? That could be dangerous.

But apparently you guys don't get it, so carry on doing nothing, but don't complain if you ever get targeted, then (and laid off, which you likely will be, because corporations retaliate all the time).

I've been here 9+ years and haven't seen even one instance of bullying. What I do miss from my younger days was pranking people and wrapping all their office stuff in wrapping paper etc... imo, vz isn't much fun, and no one is really good enough friends to do stuff like that and that could be construed as bullying by some.

I've bullied and I've been bullied. It's a right of passage. It can be fun to bully others. When I've been bullied I took it lying down. No big deal, bullying will always exist, it's part and parcel to our DNA.

Why not just admit it, bullying can be fun. Why does everyone need to be so politically correct?

This has nothing to do with layoffs at Verizon. Go peddle it somewhere else.
