How many of you listen to WJR 950 AM (traffic, weather and news)?

I'm a fairly young employee and today I flipped the station to 950 AM during my morning commute and was pleasantly surprised.

The traffic and weather reports were great. And the news was factual and didn't seem opinionated.

I'm glad I saw this thread and read your stories about it. I've made it one of my favorites.

What’s AM radio?

@3hlo

I used to frequently get stations from Chicago, New York, Cleveland, Nashville here in the Metro area of Detroit. Look up clear channel stations

So nice to drive down the memory lane...

In the winter after a long day in the office, driving home in the dark on I-94 west, I would scan the AM dial and at times, I would pick up a Boston or a New York radio station even if it was for just few minutes.

We could use more hosts like Art Bell today. He would listen to the most outrageous sstuff and rather than immediately insulting the speaker he would let them get their tale out, and then he'd he'd pull at the threads to see if the story unravelled. Very open minded about the experiences of others, but he'd also call out someone and shut them down soon as it was clear they were just liars.

I came across an archive of his shows a half-dozen years ago, and a real shocker to be reminded of what sounded crazy back in the 90's has turned out to be true.

@2cfa - I feel like we’re having a conversation over a drink!

I listen to them all! It was my education in life since I didn’t have anyone else. I think I may have started with Bruce Williams. Loved his financial advice and his stories about flying to Oshkosh.

John McCullough was fair with all the callers. I happened to meet him when there was a parrot on a tree outside of the building he was broadcasting from (Southfield).

Don’t forget about late night: Coast to Coast with Art Bell. Loved his paranormal stories. :)

@bvz here…..

@2mtw…. Spot on and thanks for nudging the memory cells on David Newman. I remember in mid-80s he was on WJR late evenings after Tiger baseball….. then he went to WXYT afternoons, then back to WJR prime time evenings which posed a problem during sports seasons.

He was a true class act.
The memories are flowing. Tommy macintyre came to WXYT after years with short commentary on WWJ.
Mark Scott was a firebrand, referred to DC as “Disneyland on the Potomac”… michigan during Blanchard years was “handout heaven”….he was mark levin before there was a mark levin… “caller, you need an epistemological housecleaning”….

John McCullough afternoons…. His “sin and win” call-ins were great to listen to….
Denny McLain had a true talent for AM drive in a talk format.

The nationally syndicated programs were great to listen to, Bruce Williams for lifestyle and financial advice, Larry King for news, politics and interesting guests, Jim Bohannon did the Saturday show and took over evenings when Larry King quit radio after he tried a failed attempt at daytime syndication in order to compete with Rush…

@1qlg+1lXSC6Cf ! Good old Mark Scott. David Newman was another one I miss...

AM radio is such a good medium. I can switch from Spanish to Polish to Greek stations and enjoy the music even if I don't understand any of words!

Trying to politicize this just further divides us... AM radio is important in 'liberal' communities too.

Removing AM band is just an all around bad idea for us all.

It has already been engineered into the vehicle. And the costs are more than accounted for. And if they eliminate AM band - Will a a buyer see a price decrease? Of course not.

Lack of AM radio was one of the contributing factors to why I decided against buying a certain vehicle recently.
No AM radio and no Android auto in a NEW car. So I'm supposed to carry my portable radio AND a mobile phone holder? Nope. May as well get an old Cavalier, at least with the Cavalier, I don't need to haul an AM radio.

AM radio has so many benefits, especially for those of us in metro detroit with the ability to get Canadian stations that have news/talk programs and different musical lineups. AM800 cklw is a wealth of perspective on issues from a Canadian point of view. CFCO am630 has great gospel music Sunday mornings. AM580 has a unique music lineup. There are cultural stations like AM680 and AM560 in foreign languages for our multicultural friends. The AM lineup is a microcosm of what makes America great and the pure joy of listening to the many choices in the car when driving.

The ability to easily switch stations and hear the new station instantly is something to value. Streaming radio station on my iPad is annoying when changing selection. You have to sit thru ads for 15 seconds, there’s connection delays, etc.

Radio and AM radio is instantaneous.

I’m pretty sure AM radio is moving to a streaming service vs. an AM antenna. It’s a good idea because much of the cost to develop electronics goes into preventing AM band interference. Getting rid of the AM antennas should’ve happened years ago

I listen to WWJ & WJR every day. How expensive is it to be able to receive AM in your car? Is this really a huge cost save?

Just another form of censorship because the majority of conservative radio is on AM stations. Not surprised at all Ford would be joining this effort.

Count me in as a longtime listener. Since age 15. Delivering newspapers via bike then car overnight.

To this day, it’s an easy informative news, traffic, sports, weather resource that is not polluted with politics from either side. Even the 1hr retirement specials on Saturday and Sunday mornings are speaking directly to me and other recent Ford retirees!

I still remember when WWJ tried to go into the talk show competition and lured Mark Scott from WXyT in 1988!

Sonny Eliot giving the weather forecast… good memories.

Maybe customers will “likely ditch” Ford when looking for a new vehicle.

Never again will one be in my garage!

I haven’t listened to AM radio in years. Just like I haven’t listened to a CD in years with the advent of the cell phone. Out with the old, in with the new.
