Reason for your layoff

I feel bad for everyone impacted. I hope you will find something better soon.
What explanation were you given for your layoff?

What was no surprise to me was that closing out my/the re-deployment was NOT mentioned in my call.

If IBM was honest they'd say X number were from closing out re-deployment. And Y are further reductions.

But it's 100% on re-deployment close-out (for those of us re-deployed) - but as anticipated never mentioned as such.

I didn't even ask. My age and salary were the obvious reasons. It was only a matter of time.

I rejoined ibm 6 months ago. Got exceptional rating in my last performance review. It did not matter. I am the only one from Atlanta working for turbonomic division.

The Costa Rica reason is mostly exaggerated. I lived and worked there for 5 years. They do not have enough trained population (about 5 million ppl total, perhaps 200k IT workers) the country lives mostly out of tourism. Costa Rica cannot absorbe a significant number of jobs. Perhaps ibm can transfer there some 200 jobs but that’s it. Make no mistake this RA is targeting 10-15% of ibm workforce, ibm Europe had some layoffs 2 weeks ago, last week it was Australia, now Is USA, next week or so will be Canada. So my guess is that only few roles will be filled in other geographies being India the main location as it is one of the few places that has the numbers in terms of trained personnel (not talking about quality) to absorbe the roles.

Not performance based. Basically, for TA and some other HR employees, their reason was to reduce cost, they will keep employees located currently in Raleigh, NC able to drive daily to RTP. Everyone else was let go. This way, cheaper to have tier 2 employees (than other tier 2 or 3) and no one can claim loss of jobs based on “age” or being “a mom”. Most of the jibs are going to Costa Rica. Those in RTP could also be put on PIP shortly and the once Costa Rica is fully up and running (6-12 months) get their notice. Also, for those that were previously “redeployed” like in System, they still needed to have the required skills. Some didn’t and had the same role at IBM for 15 years, but never dod additional training or certifications, but got angry when they were rejected. “I spoke to clients so I have communication skills”… for a Marketing job! They couldn’t even comprehend the type of “Communication” required for someone working in Marketing campaign! Or applying in Finance jibs when they NEVER worked in finances or accounting… So yeah, redeployments were limited.

Not performance based was what I was told

This is 99.9% not true. Almost all RAs within IBM were purely performance based. Those who were in the PIP would let go followed by "Needs to Improve" employees based on yearly reviews.

"Failing re-deployment" means you didn't get hired within IBM and tie is up.. My term not IBMs (though?).

Personally I believe they knowingly re-deployed far more folks than GOM openings

"re-deployment" is like RA but with >> 30 days to find another job - yourself -within IBM.
I was "re-deployed" from Systems in November. Just now RA'd. So for me - Nov to now with prime job "find another job" - didn't suck compared to normal RA of 30 days.

Up to you to find, skill-up, apply, to jobs within GOM. Your "re-deployment manager" (generally not your 1st level) often instrumental in facilitating (contacting managers of things you applied to etc) but I suppose that depends.

Same as above,

"As we navigate today’s competitive market, we continue to make thoughtful – but sometimes difficult – choices to match our talent footprint against the needs of our business, clients, partners, and our growth strategy"

Top reviews for years too and I do wish IBM well in meeting the needs of their business, clients, partners... I consider this a blessing in disguise and am feeling great about the future. :)

Can someone define redeployment - is the onus on the employee to find a new job within or the manager?

Those of us (me included) failing re-deployment - won't be mentioned as re-deployment failed. We're now part of another action. Keeps it clean.

Otherwise quite happy I am . I was wondering if I could hold out long enough to get the 3 months severance.

Not performance based was what I was told. Not a redeployment. Just a reduction in staff.

As we navigate today’s competitive market, we continue to make thoughtful – but sometimes difficult – choices to match our talent footprint against the needs of our business, clients, partners, and our growth strategy.

This includes a workforce reduction which permanently affects your employment.
