Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Which jobs are near retirement and happy

Every person I know who is 50+ is miserable. Are there jobs in the company where 50+ year olds are actually happy?

I am close to retirement. Started getting the NSI when I got near. Will get one more NSI but will be happily retiring. Feel sorry for the people who are close to 50 because they are the target to get rid of. This was planned years ago. First change the ranking policy where you could go up or down with no limit, then start getting rid of experienced people in there 50s. I think in the end, ExxonMobil will get its due. Bad things tend to happen to bad people.

@hpz - nope, you're wrong. Departments and affiliates who do meaningful work are very short handed right now. Great time to be an annuitant contractor!

Yes. MOH is a great department. They treat you with respect. I have enjoyed my time there but I’m still retiring this year because I can.

People who have stayed technical are the most miserable. A few on the management track seem happy but only if they have achieved high CL. Nothing more common than being close to retirement and bitter with good reason to be bitter.

“RE this year and enjoy my work. Have plenty to retire if I want, but lots of pressure by Company for me to stay..”

Let me translate:

“I want to retire, but I can’t afford it. I keep telling myself I enjoy my work as a coping mechanism. The company is putting pressure on me to quit, but I’m unable/unwilling to take the hint, so I’ll just keep trudging along until the situation falls apart. It’s not like I’ll have to clean it up anyway.”

There, now it makes perfect sense.

RE this year and enjoy my work. Have plenty to retire if I want, but lots of pressure by Company for me to stay. Need to consider some priorities, but nothing to complain about. The Company ran off too many good people and needs most of those left.

@caq I don’t believe you.

This story seems made-up or exaggerated.

And why are you even still working in your 60s? I guess you didn’t plan well. And don’t tell us you like work. Nobody likes work, except maybe the people who own the business.

I was fired at age 59 from a small machine shop. I kid you not, they actually wrote in my discharge letter that they would pay me $4K if I would not sue them for age discrimination. I got the $4K, reported them to the unemployment department and got my unemployment (normally you don't get unemployment if you are fired).

3 months later I got another job that doubled my old pay and I am still there 7 years later. Last month I just got another raise. Who would have guessed that in my senior years I would be earning the largest salary I have had in my entire working career.

There are companies that do value people with specialized skills.

I worked in EM well construction for 35 years (28/28) retiring from EM at the age of 65. My sup asked me to work another year but I declined. I retire FI. It was a great career!!

@oew

I also realize that the typical EM employee leans right and likes to talk-up free markets and personal responsibility.

In keeping with that, it’s ultimately your fault that you’re financially unable to retire. People who planned well are retiring in their 50s. Maybe working part-time at most, usually doing something they like.

Again: you’re dragging yourselves to jobs you despise because you made bad decisions and didn’t plan well. Kick your adult children out of the house and stop getting divorced/remarried every five years. Maybe then you can retire, and the rest of us won’t have to listen to the constant din of your whining.

@nfm+1lZg5Var you realize that retirement age is different in different countries and there is not cushy "retirement package" for many people?

45+. Realized work is a necessity. efficiency means less work is needed or more ppls needs met if wealth and power weren't being concentrated among a few. and even as a kind of debt slave I enjoy my job if it weren't for being told I suck multiple times a year.

Nobody who is 50+ and has to show up somewhere for the sake of a paycheck and health benefits is going to happy. Not at EM, not anywhere.

Everyone passes a point where they’re willing to put up with pointless BS. Happens sometime in your 40s for most people.

My suggestion to people who are 50+ is to retire. If they still want to work they can form their own LLC and work for themselves.

Be an advisor

Come and go as you want
Get your retirement spreadsheet in shape
Take your 5 weeks of vacation
Plan and build your retirement home
Spend time on your personal development or hobbies
Enjoy your family

If you are stuck in traffic, don’t road rage. Instead turn up the sound system, relax and enjoy.

Your job is more about keeping your job 1 more year and less about oil and gas.
