Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Is it in our best interest to form a union?

Seriously though, what's the proper channel for getting this going?

There is only one path to unionize. That is to organize corporate workers. The whole point of a union is that you don't need the fed or losers in management approval just your fellow grunts in the trenches. I would support a union but be warned. You'll have a corporation willng to spend billions to contend with.

I live in a country were labor laws are taken seriously, so unions have some significant power. In the 2021 reorgonizing, they're weren't able to frontally oppose the headcount cuts, but could negotiate decent separation packages. And that is because here, a massive layoff done without an agreement signed between the company and one or more unions representing at least 50% of the employees is not 100% impossible, bu will face strong headwidnds from the authorities. So the management of the company have an interest in reaching a deal.
Needless to say, I'm not a US employee... :)

There are countries where firing someone who is a Union official is near impossible. Because you would have to prove gross incompetence on a level that just does not happen a lot. but of course, you would need to be in a country that actually cares about employee rights and protects activists in that area. Unions can work on health and safety, compensation, work environment, organisational changes. It's not all black and white. Learn more about your local union laws and protections. I found it an interesting topic and can fully see while employers discourage any mention of a union because it adds pressure on them. Go and learn more about it from some independent and well informed source. Don't buy into "IT's SOCIALISM!". Be smarter than that.

Of course you should unionize, but you’ll never be able to.

The proper channel is to quit.

Seriously, as hard that it sounds, there's no way to fight the big corporation with big lawyers and deep pockets. You'll get crushed.

Engineers do have unions in Germany and some other northern european countries, believe it or not. In Catalonia, Spain, there are even Management Unions.
Crazy world out there.
Glad to be in the sanest of the sane - Lone Star!!!
