Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

4 weeks from today

Per our CWA/Leg T contract, the next "announcement date" is March 15th and some of us expect to likely be laid off due to automation and shifting of work to cheaper labor. While it's unfortunate for workers who want/need their job, many of us are joyously looking forward to taking the termination package per contract and then retire. Myself, for example, with 39 years, will get 104 weeks pay plus my 5 weeks vacation. Thanks to our union, after getting paid for 109 weeks I'll turn on my monthly pension, 401K, social security, and get benefits for life. Peace out.

OP is stating a strong union and years of service can be rewarded even if the company is mismanaged. Working outside in freezing rain all winter, climbing polls, going below ground in pi-s water to fix chewed cables is hard. Some craft areas have problem workers brought on by micromanaged 20 something ego dropouts than now have power over others. Some of these are level 2 over managers.

I'm bargained for and my lump sum dropped by $70k as of last November. So, I am forced to take the monthly payout since that does not change due to interest rates. I wish I could get laid off and collect the severance pay as mentioned! Legacy T Field techs in business services will not be affected by layoffs and should be given the opportunity to leave voluntarily, but most likely won't!

Probably not hard to automate someone’s job that was union and did nothing all day

Don’t take the monthly pension ; take the lump sum

Basically the OP is saying I got what I wanted from the union, sc--w the rest of the union folks.
I guess that’s why unions aren’t really a force anymore. It used to be a brotherhood, now it’s just a way for employees to grab more money from the company.
