Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

AT&T & CWA

It seems as though AT&T leadership is getting deeper in bed with CWA. They just laid off hundreds of temp techs only to have to rehire a couple hundred back due to a grand bargaining agreement that was made some time ago. Once again it seems as though the tail is wagging the dog.

Is March 15th still the day when craft will be notified if their jobs are at risk or will be eliminated? Apparently, per this site, the 15th of the last month of each quarter is when T is required to announce any head count reductions in the bargained for ranks.

Management needs to take a vote to join the union so they can avoid going through what they are now.

Once established within an industry, it's virtually impossible to get rid of a union within a company. Good luck with that, will never happen unless the company decides to outsource that work to vendors and not back fill positions lost for whatever reason. There are ways to diminish the union, but getting rid of it, not a chance.

Mangement needs to take a vote to vote out the union. Such a waste.

Last post, WRONG! I'm 68yo and will go up against any 30 something yo in terms of strength. The technician jobs ALREADY require you lift at least 50lbs and I haven't seen many techs over 300lbs in weight, most right around 195lbs. I plan on working til 70 years of age since I'm very capable of doing the job until then, easy peasy!

They aren’t going to give you your 104 weeks. They will change the requirements for your job to more over arching to make you want to retire before they give you that money. They view your job as a non-technical role that can be learned on the job within 6 months. They will bring in Term Employees that would gladly do the work. Then change testing requirements for the job to verify you can lift over 5-0 lbs and are under 300lbs of weight. You will eventually get to the point through age that you can’t do the job and give your job to a lower grade tech. This is just the truth of it. But hold out and see. Hopefully you don’t work to the point that your quality of life is so bad that you don’t have the ability to do anything after you retire. Money can’t by you time. And you will get to a point in life where that will be more valuable than 104 weeks of pay. Especially when you got enough money you can spend.

All of you tough talking CWA folks touting your 104 weeks of severance should be concerned. Your union negotiated a grand bargaining agreement that includes many of the outside titles and prevents surpluses. That is good for you if you want to continue to work as your job will be preserved, however if you were floating through waiting on that surplus, that is unlikely. As attrition happens you will be replaced with temps.

If T does lay off technicians eligible for 104 weeks of severance pay, it will be in very small numbers at best and spread throughout the country. I have been with T for 40 years and have only ever seen layoffs of this type usually 1 tech in each area of the country totaling no more than a dozen or so per year, if even that many! So, there won't be a massive layoff of techs receiving lots of money for nothing!

Jaw flapping about whether or not the company and/or the union "cares" about you (whatever THAT means) doesn't really matter. It likewise doesn't really matter who's sleeping with who or if YOU care about the company or the union. Everyone is just trying to get by getting the most stuff and experiences in this short life. Bottom line regarding this post is that if I get laid off, I get 104 weeks pay plus my 5 weeks unused vacation thanks to the union negotiated contract. Some in a position who's been used and manipulated by the company who DON'T get this nice termination package will be jealous or even envious and tend to lash out at union workers like me and/or the union. In reality, that negative person would LOVE to take that 109 weeks pay and all the benefits. Many of us expect to be laid off this year so we appreciate our union contract. My manager has told me she expects to be let go this year as well and she wishes she were still a union worker and that with my overtime, I make more than her. So I'm thankful to be union.

I assure you that T leadership is not in bed with CWA. There are activities happing behind closed doors on how to limit union work from progressing. You will never get anyone to acknowledge that since this would lead to a NLRB charge. Union workforce is counter productive in infrastructure builds.

CWA is a disgrace to organized labor and I’m a bargained for employee. It’s more corrupt and in bed with ATT management than the Teamsters...and the Teamsters are very, very corrupt! Organized labor was started by the organized crime syndicate and it’s still that way today. The union dues paid go to the pockets of organized criminal entities as well as democratic politicians, hence, organized crime! Don’t kid yourselves all you union members, you mean zero to the union. It’s your monthly protection money they want. Basically, legalized extortion!

Funny how those bashing CWA are likely in a non-union job with little or no job securities or benefits and they wish they could get 104 weeks pay if they were laid off like I'd get. If you were handed a winning PowerBall ticket of course you'd take it however because you got the short end of the stick by taking a non-union job at T it's like you were handed a losing lottery ticket so you're lashing out at the winners. It's understandable how it sucks to be in management where the company can di-k you around. Any and all negative responses to this will simply be laughed at, but go ahead manager! Haha...
