Thread regarding Ford layoffs

They don't care to address causes of issues

If, according to our CEO, Ford employs 25% more engineers than its needs...

The better question is will he get to the root cause of why we need 25% more people to accomplish the same work? Or will he just do another round of cuts without addressing the causes?

I get told all the damn time to not use the color red because it triggers folks at Ford.

I can’t remember the exact case study, but I do remember back in 2010 reviewing a famous example from Ford when, faced with a government bailout in 2007-2009, leadership asked for a dashboard on the state of things. When mid and senior management presented their statuses, they used the red/green/yellow color schemes, with everyone reporting either green or yellow. The CEO ripped the leaders, stating you can’t have greens and yellows if things are so bad that you have to take government handouts to survive. Glad to see it’s still status quo with leadership too afraid to look at their own failures.

6-Sigma, 8D, 5D are all just tools. You need enough time to solve things correctly, management which has the same disciplined outlook and dedicated resources. Most 8D's, 6-Panels etc. I have reviewed are very poorly written. But to your point, you don't need consultants to tell you that, just common sense and process discipline. We have all. the right processes, but not the discipline or commitment from Top Down i.e. going through program milestones red, complexity, root cause(s) not correctly identified etc.

WOA. Hold on a sec..... What happened to 6 sigma? I thought that was the panacea of all our quality problems. It was implemented as the be-all end-all. Could it be it turned out to be another BS deal that consultants sold us on? Nah, couldnt be because we are too sharp to fall for that noise.

I'll let you in on a little secret, there are more folks tracking quality than working on issues. The folks who are supposed to be working on quality issues are often buried with a million other things to do. There is no OPD or concept of owning programs from start to lifecycle end.

Those 25 percent are needed to fix the quality issues due to senior management's inability to support an additional few dollars of costs here and there to improve the quality of major assemblies such as transmissions. Rather than spend 5 bucks per unit with the supplier to make a better transmission, they would rather spend $4000 per warranty claim to replace it in the field.

@czf+1lhNZ21G We have inefficient systems and processes that need to be addressed to enable a reduction. JF is trying to jump to the payoff without putting in the hard work first.

I heard from some retirees, who've had awards for developing patents, were let go with a message that they were not trainable for EV vehicles. Sad.

You kind of answered your own question. We are inefficient and have too many employees. Reduce by 25% and then we are equivalent to our peers for efficiency.
