Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Being loyal to XOM no longer pays off

It used to. Loyalty went both ways and it provided us with proper pay increases, bonuses, and many opportunities. Now, the company expects us to be loyal but doesn't offer the same in return. They'll get rid of somebody who's been here for decades and doing a great job all that time without a second thought. Something like this was unimaginable twenty years ago.

I enjoyed a 35 year career in the O&G industry working 8 different companies (Getty, Amoco, Arco, Chevron, Union Texas Petroleum, Vastar, Puerage Energy and EM). Even as I hired on with one company I was still keeping my eyes open for a better opportunity. Once I found a better opportunity I would slowly and quietly begin to transition out of the old company. Finally, I would give notice on a Friday and started my new job on a Monday. I did that over and over again. Sometimes a company would ask that I give them more transition time, which I always did; there was never any reason to burn bridges.

This method of managing my employment helped strengthen my self respect and maintain my personal sense of power.

Finally, several years ago I retired financially independent. Life is good.

@1mtr+1liqKLCG Just a correction. What gets people laid off is to be in the NSI (Needs Significant Improvement) category. The PIP (Personal Improvement Plan) is one of the two options you have once you are NSIed. The other one is the PIL (Payment In Lieu) which is get the money and leave.
Everything you say is right. Nobody, absolutely nobody, gives a fu-k about projects anymore. People are trying to cover their a$$es to survive as long as possible while they look for another job. That's it. Projects are irrelevant. You all can thank TG and DW for this new culture We Are Fu----g ExxonMobil.
Also, there was a fatality in Baytown last week. Someone was exposed to chemicals and died at the hospital. Of course, Exxon denied everything.

OP is very right… it’s telling that most of the younger people criticize the post because they have no knowledge, no recollection of the time when the company was indeed reasonably loyal to a good employee. The very fact that this seems so difficult to understand today tells you how far this company has gone down the drain.

Biggest issue I see is when does it stop, the younger engineers are leaving because they see no path forward when we blindly cut 5-10% per year via annual layoffs (known as PIP). No one can worry about long term projects or value or collaboration when the only thing you are worried about is your next PDS cycle. The company wasn't always this way, had our issues but truly made valuable and good decisions. We now intentionally make bad ones to help our PDS cycle. They will race to the bottom in terms of quality and labor until they get a process safety type event in one of the facilities from rushing maintenance, deferred maintenance, hiring some consultants to cut corners but no one seems to care. I know people telling their children not to work at the company, so what does that tell you about the company?...layoffs in the office, layoffs in the field..they seem to not even care even if they lay people off we still have equipment to operate. Where does it stop?

I think Covid was the breaking point. Once they swallowed the pill of layoffs and 401k (and Wall Street rewarded it), everything else was easier to justify.
