The real story behind the Lightning Battery issue

The F-150 Lightning battery maker reportedly insists that the fire which forced Ford to halt production has been a one-off incident and not an inherent flaw in the manufacturing process that would require deeper investigation. SK On is increasingly worried that giving Ford more access to its battery technology may result in poaching it and go against the Korean government's trade secret guidelines for its EV industry.

I personally have seen or heard about several instances where Ford has taken proprietary information from suppliers and given it to our preferred supplier. Those preferred suppliers now have former Ford managers on their staff as VPs and Engineering Directors.

Pay Elon for battery technology - problem solved.

Ford was late to the party and is attempting shortcuts to catch up. That never goes well for either the supplier or the parasite.

The difference between Elon and Farley is on display for everyone to see. While Elon can discuss and understand technical engineering problems and propose and implement solutions. Farley is bragging about his racing abilities and his vision of the future, and struggles to answer any question with more than platitudes.

Sure both have polarizing personalities, however one is competent, the other is not. One did his homework in college, the other partied.

Union has a contract to cover these things. So the company's hands are tied. Why would Ford allow this arrangement? Because Bill has guilt over Henry using rough tactics to prevent unionizing back in the day. That's why he hams it up with the handshake with the union president at the start of negotiations, then tells his negotiators to give up the farm.

Union should not be paid 75% to sit home. They have issue with engineers wfh whether or not work requires to be in office to complete the job. Get back into work you lazy uaw. Or be prepared for scabs to take your jobs.

Who at Ford was behind the decision to build cells that weren’t of high quality.?
Let me guess Annie made the call without JF or anyone else’s knowledge? Got a bridge to sell you.

The teams worked quickly to identify the root cause of the issue. We agree with SK’s recommended changes in their equipment and processes for SK’s cell production lines. SK has started building battery cells again in Commerce, Georgia. It will take SK time to ensure they are BACK TO BUILDING high-quality cells and to deliver them to the Lightning production line. Ford’s Rouge Electric Vehicle Center will suspend production through the end of next week, and we’ll continue to provide updates.

So sayeth the supplier who was caught stealing trade secrets and IP from LG which almost caused them not to be allowed to produce or sell battery cells in the US. You get what you pay for. We should have dumped SKI two years ago. But oh no, full steam ahead, we need to build an $80K boat anchor.

They are lying. They took shortcuts on quality to meet Ford's pricing demands. Now they are claiming proprietary IP protection so that Ford can't see how shoddy that batteries really are.

Ford's dilemma: fix this across the board at a lot of time and expense, and resulting in yet another Lightning price increase, or scrap the current Lightning and start over.

Oh, and the Mach-E has the same issue. Ford is keeping that buried.

OP is absolutely correct that Ford will pirate proprietary information with their preferred suppliers often populated by former Ford employees.

Even suggest that their purchase order includes a royalty free license as part of terms and conditions.

Suppliers all say ABF (Anybody but Ford)
