Detroit Area Power Outages

Has anyone out there have been using the great feature of a Lightning to power their home? Or even the lesser F150 ICE truck with Pro Power On-board?

I would think if you are lucky enough to have a Lightning and solar at your home, you would be the most sustainable in your neighborhood after these storms! GM, Stellantis, Toyota, Honda, cannot match that right now.

Any modification to the premises which isn't specified as repair & upkeep by the assessing regulations will always be considered an "improvement" that increases the value of the property and thus the assessed tax. Government and taxes only increase, except under exceptional circumstances.

Check with local city/township. There is a trend to increase the tax on the property when putting solar panels. They claim it is improving the property value. I say it does the opposite (less attractive)!

Has anyone been able to charge their F-150 Lighting with the power out? How far have you able to drive in the last three days adding that it's the winter with freezing temperatures?

YES! I just hooked up our exercise bike up to an alternator to charge the truck. Also helped gave my fat wife some motivation to pedal so she could watch Dr.Phil

Boomers love whole house generators. It makes them feel creative.

Eat Cake indeed LOL
“ a roving powerplant, able to sell energy back to the grid whenever needed”

I remember door to door solar panel salesmen in the 1980s. Their literature and sales pitch was quite similar. I remember one neighbor falling for it and how the electric company then refused to buy the excess energy and also forced them to have regular inspections to ensure safety and how the cost of electrical upgrades and such made it so the project would take at least 25 years to recoup their outlay. The panels were on the roof and didn’t last anywhere near 25 years (hail storms, tree limbs, etc.)

Early adopters serve their purpose, but it is never financially attractive

@1boj+1lmw81GQ and OP are perfect examples of the new engineering and marketing skillset the company needs - using widespread power outages as a selling point for EVs. It would be hilarious if I was already retired.

Not a boomer and still know that using your $80k+ truck as a generator is a stupid idea. But then these millennials think they know better so let them go, they're rollin...... Food fight!!

Being a millennial is like being in college your entire life.

@1gun. What fast charger? We are talking about using what little range you may have left in your truck to power your home because there is a power failure. Hopefully you didn't arrive home to a power failure needing a charge. I don't expect EVs to cause a decline in Generac sales.

OP: You're not wrong but it is lost on the boomers that frequent this website.

The morale is not very good and there are power outages making things worse. I took steps into my own hands to improve morale by upgrading my 94 tempo with a high output, alternator and powered my house.

@1aos+1lmw81GQ It was his personal truck, and it was a hybrid. Not a lightning.

Op…and other ev supporters on this string…spare me your bull sh—. I can go buy a generator for up to $2000 that is better than your $100000 over priced generator. Even up to $5-$6Gs for a generac whole house generator. Stop trying to play that added benefit angle.. if that is the case you should market the added benefits of the f150 as a fireplace when the battery burns….keep in your lane with Tesla and keep selling a status symbol trendy toy for rich people or faux rich.. let’s see if you survive the ev shake out or the next economic down turn.

Oh yes don't forget the PR BS stories early on a when a Ford eng happened to have a prototype Lighting for the weekend and happened to go to a wedding when the power failed and like a hero to save the day he plugged in the M plate Lighting ( should not have driven the M plate to the wedding anyway but I digress) and was able to provide power for the wedding events I also believe it was a ethnic wedding so a Trifecta of BS with diversity, wokeness and associated PR BS all rolled into one.

You guys do realize that there are fast chargers right? Less than an hour of charging will have the truck back up to 80%+.

@1gun+1lmw81GQ do you know that fast charging is hard on batteries and can bring of failure modes leading to fire?

America! Where we set the standard by having a $100,000 rolling battery for when our power grid fails us for the umpteenth time. And solar, there is the solution. $50k of panels, wiring updates, DC/AC inverters, and even more batteries!

Invest taxes or energy utilities in making the grid more robust which would help everyone? No thank you, that is socialism.

Starving, no electricity, no heat? Why don't they just eat cake and take a hot bath in the jacuzzi powered by their solar panels and electricity stored in their Lighting?

Not a single story about this happening. And it's because using your truck as a generator is just a terrible idea.

After the power runs out on the truck, then what? There is no power in my house, and I can’t drive anywhere to buy any food, etc..

Yeah, great feature. Use what little charge you have to power your home for a little while. Don't plan on driving anywhere.
